When she was only 15, Pieper Lewis, a victim of abuse at the hands of her family, was a homeless runaway when she was held hostage and repeatedly raped, abused, and trafficked by Zachary Brooks, a 37 year old predator. He slashed her throat, leaving a scar.
Finding her only opportunity to escape, she stabbed Brooks. She was arrested for this and is now on trial for murder.
Brooks was never charged with sex trafficking Lewis, though she, his victim and a minor, has been charged with murdering him.
Lewis awaits sentencing on Wednesday at Polk County Criminal Courthouse for a first-degree murder charge. The teen agreed to plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter and willful injury in adult court. Lewis could be sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in prison for each charge.
Pieper Lewis’ 9th grade teacher has started a GoFundMe in support of her as she prepares to go to trial for a murder she never should have been charged with.
