Which of these books came out first? I know they were released in 1970, but what months? I want to look into the reaction to these books. (And having the months would help. And also just to know.) They came out in the early years of the movement; Kate Millett and Shulamith Firestone must’ve faced some backlash, I’m sure.
Okay, I was reading Notes from the Second Year which was published in 1970, and in there, it says The Dialectic of Sex was published in September 1970, and that Sexual Politics was scheduled to be published in May 1970. But saying it's scheduled to be published in May doesn't mean it was ultimately scheduled in May, which is a bit strange. This requires further investigation. Another thing that might be throwing things off is that "Sexual Politics" seems to have begun as "Sexual Politics: A Manifesto for Revolution," written in the winter of 1968. So I guess I'll have to check to see which "Sexual Politics" is being cited.
Oh, interesting. So perhaps it got delayed?
I did wonder if there were different publication dates for different countries, like there are now, but it seemed like most of these were probably US (only?) dates.
Good sleuthing!
From some limited searches, I think Sexual Politics may have been published before The Dialectic of Sex, but I couldn't find a definite date.
The Wikipedia page for The Dialectic of Sex says it came out in October of 1970 (source is a New Yorker article by Susan Faludi). I found a few newspaper reviews of Sexual Politics from before then, one from August and a few in September, so it's likely it was published first. There's also a paper by Sheila Jeffreys about Kate Millett (PDF) that mentions that Time magazine featured the book in August 1970.
