Okay I know what a biscuit is. But what was that is it a biscuit or a cake thing Kathleen Stock mentions? What is it called? I am listening to her on audible so I can’t just look for it.

Also the book is amazing so far. It’s all there. I can’t imagine how she managed to write all that stuff without going crazy. Everyone should read it or listen to it. Much better than the internet :)

Jaffa Cakes. There was a court case on whether a Jaffa Cake is a cake or a biscuit in the UK sense of the word (there are different VAT rates.) The manufacturers proved in court it was a cake.

This rather delightful factoid is sadly over-referenced among nerdy types but it’s still cute when you first learn it.

No doubt in part to it being mentioned on QI years ago 🤓

I LOVE Jaffa Cakes. Can only get a 10 pack here in the US and it’s expensive. 😭

What are VAT rates?

The UK version of sales tax (Value Added Tax.) Tax nerds will discuss the pros and cons relative to the US version. One pro: what you see is what you pay, none of this extra 7% or whatever at the checkout. One con: people don’t realize how much tax they pay when it’s built in. It can also be harder to administer.

Do yourself a favor and mail order some Jaffa cakes (for research, of course).

They’re basically the same as the biscuits called “Pims” in France and Spain if that helps.

A biscuit as in what Americans call a cookie? A biscuit cake is a cake made with digestive biscuits and chocolate. It is delicious. Just guessing because I haven't listened to it.
