Here is an archive.ph link to the Them.us article about it:

https://archive.ph/EuSrA

Here is the link to the actual journal article it cites:

https://publications.aap.org/pediatrics/article/doi/10.1542/peds.2022-056567/188709/Sex-Assigned-at-Birth-Ratio-Among-Transgender-and

Haven't actually read it yet to formulate my own thoughts but i just wanted to share it because several of my friends on instagram are reposting it with the caption "trans is normal".

Edit: okay now that I've looked at it, it only looks at data between 2017-2019. That doesn't feel like a large enough window to me. For it to mean much at all. Let me know if I need to change the flair to discussion

It’s not even 2017 to 2019 - it is 2017 and 2019, so an even shorter window. If Turban et al wanted to honestly examine the influence of social contagion they would have not have used this dataset, which aims to understand the overall health of high school students.

For one, you are correct that the time period is too short - they are only comparing two time points. Additionally, to understand social contagion, researchers need to ask trans youth if they know IRL any other trans youth and if so, how many. Additionally, they are assuming that the best way to see social contagion is via an increase in AFAB transitioning. However, the research overlooks two glaring facts: that the survey asks about sex (not sex reported at birth) and does not ask about gender - and as we know, it is becoming increasingly common for trans people to record sex as the gender they identify as; second, that according to their own data there was an 7 point increase in the proportion of trans females vs trans males.

All in all this is par for the course for Jack. He pumps out research with great proclamations of “debunking” but when you get past the abstract you see that the data cannot methodologically assert those claims. But this is his intention - he doesn’t want to honestly analyze these questions - he just wants to promote himself as the leading trans youth researcher in the US, not actually promote health and well being for gender distressed youth.

As an aside, I have been keeping up-to-date with his research for a few years now. I am a researcher myself and his methods are so blatantly absurd that it boggles my mind how he has been held in such a high esteem (Scientific American trans science contributor, employed in academia as an MD psychiatric researcher). This man is not stupid so he must know how ridiculous his “research” is and many of his colleagues must know too. The good news is that finally other academics/doctors/researchers pointing out these absurdities. I have seen multiple, thoughtful, and accurate Twitter threads about it today. I think he is finally getting pushback about this.

PS - the peer-reviewed journals that publish his shit are also part of the problem.

The subjectification of journals is like my least favorite thing happening to science. It's bonkers. (I used to work in a lab myself so I know how it's SUPPOSED to be!)

It's direct manipulation for sure. If they wanted to say something about ROGD i feel like they'd need ten years of data at least. Because the current detransition wave is people who transitioned as early as or as late as 5 years ago...

Turban is a quack, cherry picking his data and misrepresenting his findings. He’s also being paid by the pharmaceutical companies that make puberty blockers 😑

Oh dang I didn't know that. Have you got a link for the funding thing? (I'd like to share it with someone I know)

Oh data from trans organisations seems unbiased. Oh also just conveniently omitting the fact that on screening the different groups for 'reciecing puberty blockers' and general gendy population he has only filtered the puberty blocked population for having any mental health issues. Weird how that group turned out to be mentally healthier in comparison to the group that included the mentally ill anyways no deliberate obfuscation here. Anyway lifesaving it's the puberty blockers that help you out Oh the sex recorded doesn't differentiate between "asab" and the delusional one making the statistics impossible to actually be consistent, awesome. I'm glad there's only two points that wetr evaluated in this. Also using studies that aren't related to data collecting and are instead about school bullying for some reason.

It is certainly not like all TRA lawgic where these individuals start at twaw and will cherrypick evidence and outwardly lie to prove that they're not horrific child abusers and protect their image nosiree. Awful

Super biased and with a stupidly small sample size + cherry picked data. Also paid for by the companies that push blockers LMAO.

Not only is the data only from two years, it is only from a grand total of fourteen states, none of which are named. I would love to know exactly which states he used. Data regarding gender tomfoolery from mostly bible belt states or central states with low populations is going to look VERY different from data coming from CA, WA, MA, etc where the gender groomers have their claws dug in deep.

I posted about it 2 days ago in this same circle if you're interested.
