Pullman has shown a lot of cowardice on the subject of the protection of same-sex spaces, but in this letter he appears to have grown a spine and is criticising the Society of Authors (see Vichy feminist and SoA president JoanneHarris, who refused to take death threats against JKR seriously).

Update: Edited to add that today Private Eye exposed a letter Pullman had written, which was leaked.

I'm still disappointed in him and Atwood for failing to embody the values they wrote about, but better late than never.

Me: The more high profile help we get the better.

Also me: Why should any of us care about the opinion of some guy who can't really be trusted when the pressure is on?

He's rather late.

I wonder whether he's now worried that the tide is turning and wants to be on the right side of history ...

Really, I cannot respect any male author who didn't defend Rowling the moment she was attacked. It is so little risk for them. Men are never threatened with rape by TRAs. But no, they're cowards.

This is exactly it. He's noticed the trend change and is adjusting accordingly. If the current increase in trans-critical thought reverses, he will adjust again to that trend.

This is exactly what we need more of. From what I know about Pullman I would bet that he is in sympathy with TRAs on that issue, but he defends freedom of speech for people with whom he disagrees. That is how it is meant to be done.

OMG this makes me so happy! Especially since his books are exactly about not following this cult that is keeping people away from true knowledge.

I wish more people in the public eye had the guts to just call it like it is.

Indeed Pullman is late, but he wrote awesome feminist novels, especially The Golden Compass criticising a group of fanatics self-righteously mutilating children. He is on our side for sure.
