Transgender adolescents suffer from disproportionately high rates of depression and other mental health issues.

Just pulled this quote from the NYT article on puberty blockers thread.

This is so misleading. They keep stating this as a fact. But reality is it can more likely than not be the other way:

Adolescents with depression and other mental health issues suffer disproportionately high rates of gender dysphoria and have high rates of adopting a gender identity different from their biological sex.

I’m sure it’s like a spiral and not a chicken/egg thing.

Depressed / mentally ill kids are more likely to see “gender” as an (easy) answer / fix for the problems they’re afraid or unwilling or unable to confront.

And then the “treatment” has a lot of side effects, some medical, some social, some psychological that leads to more depression / mental illness

A perpetual downward spiral unless the underlying depression / mental illness is addressed in therapy (not with affirmation and/or cosmetic drugs/procedures)

The medical assessment may be a spiral. But I'm talking about media and laypeople talking points. The quote I showed in the OP was taken directly from the NYT, our US "newspaper of record". It's just taken as fact, so I want to point out how there's no questioning of the other way around, even if the other way around is actually a spiral and not a cause.

Also, a spiral can only happen and be properly figured out by questioning the other way around. The way they currently do it, there can never be a spiral, because all you can do, and all healthcare professionals are allowed to do, is to affirm, affirm, and affirm. Or be punished for "conversion therapy".

Absolutely. Reminds me of how doctors will just call a woman's pain "fibromyalgia" because it's easier than figuring out what's actually wrong. Gender dysphoria has become a catch-all for body image issues and low self-esteem, both of which are disproportionately high in adolescence because most of us don't feel great about ourselves as teenagers.

There needs to be more discussion about teenage depression and mental health. Puberty is a tough time for everyone, gay, straight, gender non conforming, etc. Everyone is varying levels of uncomfortable, moody, etc. Teenagers need more sleep, more/less of certain vitamins, they're stressed out, expected to choose a career before they're allowed to fucking vote, dealing with varying degrees of peer pressure, I could think of more things I'm sure.

But society just mocks them, especially teenage girls. Teenagers need more support and compassion. I always said, even as a little kid, that I would never forget what it was like to be a kid+ teenager, bc all the adults in my family totally forgot what it was like and it was SO frustrating.

I think being a teenager now is so much harder because of the internet. There's just no comparison to anyone growing up before 2005. And yes i know the internet was around way before that but technology has advanced. GIFs are now old news and full styled videos with filters etc. Before "the internet" it was all about what was happening at school. Now its 24/7 wether you are online or not. The "cool kids" competitions between high schoolers must be insane. I dont know how i would have handled that as a teenager at all.

Nobody says that because the next sentence is: Our fab modern life is dehumanizing and is making everyone, especially our vulnerable and neglected kids, mentally ill. Psych care is no longer about healing the spirit and fostering resiliency, but is instead all about medicating or changing the body now.

TRA recruiters are a reincarnation of 19th century snake oil salesmen. “Step right up! Are you depressed and tired of the sexism you endure due to being born a female? We have the cure right here! Become a boy and enjoy all the benefits of the patriarchy!”

"Are you wearing a t-shirt from the guys section? Here's some testosterone!"

You can't ask questions like this or have a discussion about it without being labeled a transphobe. I got into it with a tim on Insta and he immediately went straight to: "it's obvious you want all trans ppl dead"

Like, dramatic, much? Shut the fuck up, drama king

and of course any thought of mental-health treatment goes out the window as soon as a kid (or an adult, i'm sure) gets on the trans treadmill.

Yeah, and why is this? It's because TRA groomers online are busy evangelizing the gender ideology religion as a cure for all that ails you. They're flooding the social media platforms that teens and pre-teens use with their testimonies about how transition cured their mental illness, made them popular in school, gave them an army of online "friends" and "allies", made everyone praise them and pay attention to them all of the sudden, shielded them from all criticism and personal responsibility, and rescued them from the social difficulties associated with being a female and/or homosexual. I can't think of many adolescents in the throws of puberty that this wouldn't appeal to at least on some level.
