The other day a male youtuber Charlie McDonnell released a video where he comes out by saying "I'm a women now" to much fanfare and praise from his followers. Its just uncritically accepted that he can simply choose to now magically be a woman.
Now I don't believe you can change sex and I don't believe in gender woo but I am curious what drives this assumption that one can change sex, what motivates these people? Is it internalised homophobia meaning young gay men and women feel more comfortable with saying they are trans than saying they are gay? Is it autogynaphilia or porn sickness? Is it social contagion, or just another fad with dire consequences?
Is it a young person with the depression and anxiety so common in the the modern age casting around for anything to make them feel better? Is it a way to stay relevent or gain kudos from a peer group or fanbase?
I'm just confused, what does the science say and why is what was once a very rare form of dysphoria now increasingly common?
A lot of people here gave some very jaded albeit probably very accurate responses, but i also want to point that i think some of them might feel like they have richer, more complex emotional experiences than other boys, and have bought in to the misogynistic idea that only women have complex emotions.
