So I was browsing a certain fruit farm and someone said:

Also, I'm super pissed Ovarit got banned by my internet service provider (Virgin Media UK) as an adult website, like 4chan or pornhub. Kiwifarms and reddit are unbanned though.

Can anyone confirm or deny this? I don't live in the UK, but certainly an ISP banning this site oversteps some rule?

Some ISPs have child-safety blocks, where users of those ISPs can report sites to be added to the child-unsafe list. Child-safe mode is an option that can be toggled on and off. Tbh I think if you want to browse the internet in a "child-safe" mode as filtered by a stranger, you can't really be surprised when they make choices you wouldn't. I'd guess ovarit got reported by confused TRAs who thought they could shut the website down by reporting it, but who knows.

That is so dystopian that a questioning child wouldn't be able to find us, even if they wanted to.

I cannot go on ovarit when I am on my work WiFi, I live in the Netherlands. I can however (I tried to see if it had anything to do with NSFW things) acces sites like pornhub. I have no idea why ovarit specifically is banned - maybe it has something to do with that.

Be careful about what sites you access at work, as often your internet is monitored. My guess is that whoever is in charge of your firewall was browsing the access logs, saw what he considers a "TERF" site, and blocked it on purpose.

Pornhub and reddit obviously must remain unblocked so he can entertain himself while at work.

I have the same broadband (which incidentally is awful) and I can access Ovarit fine so far, although I'm pretty sure I've not go child safe turned on

I think last week I found I couldn't access Ovarit, and a couple of the sites people here linked to. After someone on Spinster helped me identify the problem, I complained twice to my ISP who told me both times it was 'a known issue', they were sorting it out, and they had no idea when they would resolve it. I think it took them a few days to unblock but they finally did.

I have no idea if this is true, but the prospect is scary and if it does get blocked, I don't even know how I'll message anyone else from here. I'm not on Twitter or Spinster or anything else. Hopefully we'll be able to find a way around rights violations like that when or if they occur.

I can guide you through a new system I’m a part of a group of women working on. It will require a brand new email account from an encrypted service and a download of an encrypted messaging app. We will all have to have alternate accounts completely off of the surface web!

This sounds ideal. A GC discord I'm part of was banned recently, and many of us were able to regroup through here but realistically we all need to be on separate networks where we can remain anonymous. Crazy that we have to go to such lengths just to talk about our own oppression!

Feminists need modern speakeasies just to assemble and talk about our issues. Its fucking insane that we need to assemble in secret like we're back in the dark ages!

And I don’t think it’s crazy we have to go to these lengths I think it’s a blessing in disguise. I unfortunately think women need these things to keep happening to them before we roll up our sleeves and get to work building our own infrastructures on all levels. For us by us. Persecution is a blessing in disguise. We are going to have to create our own world and that’s for the better.

A fellow Ovarit user mentioned retro share to me last month. If I’m understanding it right it works off of local hosting so there is no relying on some other entity and their databases! My own ideas tho rely on platforms created expressly for encryption and privacy that don’t track any of your data... Until we can expand on things like Ovarit that we own, I do believe it safe for the moment to rely on services like proton mail, Tutanota or wikr for DMing and text

I had made a gc discord but it died as we are all busy with life 🙁 if anyone is part of a more active server id love to join

Reporting opinions they don't like as "adult content" has been a woke/SJW strategy for a while (its been used to make sure content like Prager U & Louder With Crowder is blocked by school and child-safe filters so kids and teens can't see it). I'm honestly surprised it took this long for it to happen to Ovarit

So for the computer-stupid: if ISPs start banning Ovarit, will using Tor or a VPN help? I'm thinking I need to learn how to use these systems anyway.

[–] pennygadget 6 points (+6|-0)

I want an answer to this as well. If so, I'm buying a VPN today!

I need to find a "safe, private online activity for dummies" book.

Ugh, I accidentally saw an image of a violently murdered teenage girl on Kiwifarms last year when I don't know what it was. I was googling her murder and found a thread and the image haunts still haunts me. Absolutely bonkers that someone would ban Ovarit but not that site.

[–] GCnewb 4 points (+4|-0)

I'm in the UK, on a different provider and have no problems but I don't have an adult filter either.

[–] Flick 2 points (+2|-0)

I know two Spinsters who’ve run afoul of this.

idk, my ISP (Comcast) doesn't block anything. hell, Comcast doesn't even care about providing a stable internet connection to their customers, lol
