Bechdel says she’s heartened by the strides that the LGBTQ+ community has made since she first started writing and drawing, but she’s also aware that gains can always be lost and that progress only goes so far. (She singles out the recent legislative attacks on the trans community as “particularly troubling.”)

The "legislative attacks" refer to the Arkansas bill.

I have a volume of 'Dykes to watch out for' with strips from around 2000, in which her stand-in character voices gender-critical doubts about lesbians becoming "trans men", but during the story arch she becomes schooled by another lesbian and eventually changes her mind. So I guess she's now fully on board with this.

She recently did a Valentine's Day event where a TIM (Lauren John Joseph, who likes to photograph his genitals in fishnets) was selected to read aloud love letters between Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West. Yes, a Valentine's event celebrating a lesbian relationship was handed over to a dude specializing in dick pics, and she was part of the event. She's doing another event this month with Torrey Peters, the TIM on the Women's Fiction list.

She knows very fucking well that TIMs are men but she won't speak out. Her career wouldn't survive it - not at age 60, with DTWOF long behind her and Fun Home a long time ago too. She'd be dismissed as an out-of-touch Boomer/TERF/Karen and there'd be no more events or interviews or admiration. She knows it, she saw what happened to JKR and Navratilova, and she's not as powerful as they are. And it's maddening, because her early work is full of Mich Fest, women's bookstores, and butch women, and she knows that world is going-going-gone for the lesbians coming up behind her.

I guess that destroys my theory that she doesn't know what TIMs are like. Nevertheless, she was pushing trans back when she was still writing Dykes to Watch Out For, so this isn't a new development.
