Drag queen to play "Mama Morton" on Broadway

Interview starts at 2:31.

It's not like there's a wealth of roles for older (meaning 30+) women on Broadway but, sure, let's give this one to a man. Of course, my personal favorite stunt casting came with "Sis" being cast as Ado Annie in "Oklahoma". Even if he was actually a woman, he'd be totally miscast in that role. Being a man just made it worse.

Hey, it's Chicago again. (They cast a TIM as Roxie a little while ago). This cracks me up because there's a character in Chicago, Mary Sunshine, that's a guy in drag. They do a reveal and everything. "Look, this woman character is actually a guy in drag, but please don't look at that other woman character, who is also a guy in drag."

Like there isn’t enough roles in broadway for men 🙄

More than for women, especially once you're out of your 20's. Men can "age gracefully" in the arts, while woman just get old.

Exactly. There’s no reason to give female roles away to men unless you’re a misogynist.

I hate it when women’s roles are played by men. There are so few women’s parts and so Many more women who want a career as an actress.

fuck that

Mama Morton is a fun secondary character and her song is so great and it hits different when it's a connected WOMAN in prison and not a dumbs guy

They cast a man to play Roxie Hart in a recent production too. 🙄

And for god's sake--this show already has a role written for a drag queen in it--Mary Sunshine.
