He did it on purpose.

[–] Fugacity 7 points (+7|-0)

I'm a bit out of the loop - what would he gain by failing on purpose? Is it because he knew he'd be torn to shreds if he did well?

[–] Omina_Sentenziosa 25 points (+25|-0)

That, and he can use the fact that he lost to 1) "prove" that males can lose against women, 2) pretend that he lost because the big bad TERFs triggered him too much for him to focus and win and 3) twist it enough to pretend that he did it for women's sake, meaning that he lost because he suddenly grew a conscience and realized that it wasn't fair.

I'm going to assume he feared the backlash if he won. 87+ kg is nothing for a man to lift, especially one that's competed before.

[–] PortiaVenezia 53 points (+53|-0)

He stole a NZ woman's place to get to the games and another woman's place for the spot in the finals

Completely selfish spectacular failure. Pathetic.

[–] corporalwojtek 10 points (+10|-0)

Wasn’t it a Nauru woman he beat out?

[–] LilianH 27 points (+27|-0)

It was, but then the IOC gave her a wild card entry to the games so no one could point that out any more.

Actually it was Nini Manumua from Tonga who was knocked out of the direct qualifications and after several tense days was given the wildcard place.

Had this not happened, then Roviel Detenamo of Nauru is the woman who was most likely to have been given the wildcard spot.

In addition, a New Zealand competitor, Tracey Lambrechs, was told she could not compete against Gavin Hubbard, and was given two options: either lose weight and compete in a lighter class, or retire. She did lose sufficient weight but ended up retiring.

[–] PortiaVenezia 11 points (+11|-0)

You're right, I didn't realise the selection was for someone from Oceania not just NZ

Which makes it even worse. Nauru is economically disadvantaged so to have her spot stolen by a middle aged white man is absolutely disgusting

Worse, it’s one of the five poorest countries in the world, and has the highest obesity rates in the world (due to phosphate-mining which made it impossible to grow crops locally, forcing them to rely on imported processed foods). That Olympic championship may have been Roviel Detenamo’s only chance out of poverty.

He still won because he got to participate. Who knows, maybe in 2024 it won't be a 43 yo TIM but a 22 yo TIM.

That said, I am in awe of the female weight lifters, especially Li Wenwen. I had never watched weightlifting before and the one good thing that came from Hubbard's participation for me is that I've found a new sport to watch!

[–] Rag3 5 points (+5|-0)

Weight lifting is amazing to watch. I’m glad you have another set of female athletes to support! :)

[–] goodyusername 44 points (+44|-0)

He looked flabby next to the women. Who look like mountains. Like they could lift mountains. Power-effing-houses.

[–] GrendelsMother 4 points (+4|-0)

To be fair, men who are built like flabby barrels can be VERY STRONG. Defined muscles are for looks, not function. Blacksmiths are built like him.

Im almost certain he did it on purpose. Ive watched a lot of the weight lifting this year and cant remember seeing any woman fail all 3 attempts- if it did happen, its rare. If it wasnt on purpose, he really just sucks (he came 6th against Li Wenwen in an earlier competition, hah)

On a side note, when the contestants were being presented, he pushed his way into the line! Christ.

Loved the cheeky wink from Sarah Roebels

editing two days later to include this clip of the lineup, so glad someone grabbed it: https://mobile.twitter.com/laura92brown/status/1422211403990118400

The thing is, he's 43. Men have an inherent advantage at physical ability against women, but age has a way of hugely affecting that. You can see in many sports that sportswomen play with men in testimonials involving older players and don't look overwhelmed at all, because a woman in her 20's is more than capable of being better than a man in his late 30's onwards. And at that age, you decline hugely month to month

[–] NotCis 7 points (+8|-1)

Of course he’ll be called brave and stunning for DNFing while Biles, the GOAT in gymnastics, got criticized.

[–] sarahsmile 39 points (+39|-0)

Beware: this will be used as “see, dudes don’t always win!”

[–] Ghostfem 11 points (+11|-0)

People having advantages and them losing in competitions aren't mutually exclusive. Even the richest daddy's kid who got his college expanses accounted for isn't guaranteed to outperform poor students who work part time while they study.

[–] Omina_Sentenziosa 4 points (+4|-0) Edited

You are right, but you know how deceitful these people are and how dumb their supporters are.

Brave and stunning woman losing again old boring women = Trans women don't have advantages.

Thats how it's going to be painted as. Selective ignoring of reality and logic in favor of stanning.

[–] Ghostfem 5 points (+5|-0)

Honestly I don't care what deluded people have to say, there's nothing we can do about it and they've already said much, much worse (little girls shouldn't stare at their flasher's dick, that's rude!). I've given up hope on the gender cultists; by this point I see arguing with them to be as futile as trying to convince an incel that women are human.

My belief is that anyone with half a braincell doesn't need us to explain why men and women should not compete together, and anyone questioning that is being disingenuous. Our energy is far better spent raising awareness in normies than saving cultists. If they think small girls should feel safe around adult men, they're not capable of honest discussion.

[–] jelliknight 1 points (+1|-0)

Its such a dumb argument. We never said there was NO man who could be beaten by our top athletes. The top woman will never beat the top man im weight lifting but of course she can beat some middle aged blobs.

And even if the top woman did one day beat the top man it wouldnt matter because women are not defined by weakness

[–] PeakyLen 32 points (+32|-0)

Whether deliberate or not this is going to be twisted into "poor Hubbard had the pressure and stress of all these nasty terfs saying he shouldn't have been there, it's women's fault he failed."

[–] Ghostfem 12 points (+12|-0)

Jokes on them, pretty sure he got gender euphoria from not being able to lift those weights, dainty little flower that he is. Is there any better proof that he's a woman? /s

[–] NewMa 3 points (+3|-0)

Great now we're all going to have to deal with the thought of his microboner at the Olympics.

[–] shewolfoffrance 5 points (+5|-0)

Meanwhile, female athletes get hate for not smiling enough, not being "nice" enough, and not looking pretty.

[–] CaptainLavender 28 points (+28|-0)

On a different note: the threads about this on the olympics subreddit have been really based. People are mad. And now the comments are being deleted...I took screenshots first!

[–] TheRoyalJesterf 10 points (+10|-0)

Please post them when you get a chance! Thank you for catching that!

[–] CaptainLavender 9 points (+9|-0) Edited

I uploaded them here, sorry if the format is odd. A bunch of these are gone already

I know the Caster comment is wrong but thought it was worth upvoting regardless

[–] TheRoyalJesterf 3 points (+3|-0)

Thank you for this! Interesting comments.

Another funny one is one that claims that male puberty doesn't give much of an advantage, but "35 years as a male does." LOL WHAT? Has that user SEEN the difference of male and female puberty?

I'm glad so many comments are based but I'm also facepalming at the stupidity of some of the others.

[–] Kcotter7 23 points (+23|-0)

I think he thought he would blitz it. And failed. He looked out of shape. He deserves no more attention.

Those women are awesome! They deserve all the recognition.

[–] goodyusername 13 points (+13|-0)

I watched the whole thing, I got invested. Phew! A new Olympic record was set. Now I'll go do my workout with my 5.5 kg dumbbells...

[–] Lee-Side_ 21 points (+21|-0)

What a shame that the woman who would have qualified if not for this imposter had to stay home. This clown wasted the country's opportunity.

[–] Hermione 18 points (+18|-0)

Hmmm. He’s kind of selfish to “take one for the team” and take a nose dive but if he creamed them he’d be hauled over the coals a lot more publicly and so whimper out. Or was pressured to do so quietly by officials looking to not look bad.

Or he just effed around and was out of shape.

BUT!!! Before anyone starts to crow that he thus had no advantages; look at his past “championships” and let me know how many FEMALE 43 year old weightlifters with broken arms were there. If Hubbard has no advantages over women than shouldn’t we have seen a good handful of older women competing? If he were born female in the 1970’s his career would have been over almost 20 years ago.
