Best seems to fit a rather standard archetype of male criminal and was, sadly, killed as a result of a hit and run. Every report describes him as a woman:
The picture immediately reads as male to many of us (I think the long philtrum is something that we intuitively pick out). It's very difficult to find out that Wakeen is male, despite his history of criminality being so clearly male associated. Look at the effects this has in the comments of the SF Chronicle link above, where a commenter testifies to having seen Wakeen:
I watched this person (I really thought it was a man) break into a car near the Levi's HQ, and called in the getaway car's license plate. Did not realize back then that stolen license plates (or stolen cars) are often used when working the smash-and-grab trade in SF. At least I saved one woman's belongings. I charged this person and they retreated after breaking the glass, but before they grabbed the contents. When I saw the story of the dog dropped to her death I immediately recognized the suspect and was happy at least some justice was served. There could be literally hundreds or thousands of people victimized by her in the past - now that is a tragedy.
The commenter believes that Wakeen is actually female. Consider this picture (which doesn't show up on twitter anymore, only google search):
It's quite obvious that Wakeen is male.
It is important to continue to be critical of media reports that report men as women. It seems to be the number of false classifications of women as men are very very low and that we can ask if a supposed "woman" is male without insult.
