Of course the Jennings and the Duggars are on the same cable channel. People watch both shows because they're 21st century freak shows. The Duggars are weird and creepy, as are the Jennings. Just for different reasons. People that relate to them or admire them are shitty people. But so are all the viewers. This is just about watching dysfunctional families self-destruct as the years go by.

So here is what is so tragic about Jazz Jennings- he truly believes the whole reason he is doing this is to be an ambassador for trans people. Someone who informs an ignorant public. An educator. He's making life easier for the next generation of trans kids. Leading America to be more accepting and kind.

He doesn't know that the real reason he's been in front of a camera his whole life is the freak factor. Otherwise TLC wouldn't bother with him. Freak show = $$$$. It's not representation. It's all about ratings.

The whole show educates no one, since it only spreads misinformation. Well, it does educate people, in a way, because we can see all the abuse and pseudo-science before our eyes.

What's most disturbing is that a lot of people who are mentally fit, not delusional, not religious fanatics, made the decision to push the show forward. For sheer profit, they've told this kid that many trans kids all over the world were counting on him to make people aware of their plight.

It's all beyond any horror movie I can think of.

Wow, you just made me see Jazz as kind of a Truman Show tragedy. His life is being exploited for puerile entertainment, but he thinks it is more noble than that.

I find it hard to believe he’s completely oblivious, though. This season is getting a lot of mileage out of his obesity and mental health issues. Like, how is this storyline helping to normalize and depathologize transgender?

I find it hard to believe he’s completely oblivious, though.

I don't. The puberty blockers he took likely stunted his brain development along with his physical development. He essentially has the mind of a child. Combine that with the spoiled bubble he's lived in his whole life, and its not hard to believe that Jazz blindly believes himself to be the modern transgender version of Ruby Bridges

I'm with you. I only watched fragments but the contrast between what you know and see as a viewer and what you see from Jazz is heartbreaking.

You realize you are watching a young person who basically grew up in a cult. The family interpreted and "explained" every aspect of Jazz's existence for him. He's been brainwashed by his mother's constant repetitions that he's a girl and forced into taking cross-sex hormones and into surgery that terrified him.

I have a really hard time watching even bits of that show. It's horrific how this kid has never been given space to think on his own about anything. He's been a cash cow for his parents since early childhood.

It's obvious he is in mental anguish -- afraid to leave and go to college, afraid of life because he's never been allowed to develop any measure of independence. His body is unwell after all the experimentation. He's developed an eating disorder. And what do the family do? They crack fat jokes to shame him and dismiss that his sudden massive weight gain is a sign of deep problems no one is helping him address...

Just for the record, Jazz developed the binge eating disorder years ago. It's one of the reasons he dropped out of regular HS and decided to go to school online.

I have just started watching out of morbid curiosity and it is really fascinating and horrendous. He goes bowling with friends and the whole thing just revolves around him being trans. One young chap gets hauled over and grilled about why the other boys didn't come to check for transphobia. If he had just focused on bowling he would have had a nice time. I think TLC have groomed him into being permanently distressed by perceived transphobia and gave him no exit off the trans train. I feel it is my terven duty to watch it but it does make me sad. His parents are extremely sexist and believe in 'inner gender' He loves and idolises his sister. I think he imitated her and wanted to be her when he was small which he would probably grown out of given the opportunity. I hope she doesn't blame herself in any way and last I heard she had moved to Alaska with her boyfriend. Very sensible.

Quite a jump from Florida weather to Alaska weather! But I've seen the sister put Jazz down as well. I don't know if it's just sibling rage that the world revolved around him since the day he was born. But the whole family is shitty to him.

The older sister has moved to Arkansas, not Alaska, to start work on a PhD at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

Thank you, don't know why I thought Alaska. Perhaps I didn't think Arkansas was far away enough!

Is that the same sister he said (in so many words) would be his brood mare? The one his hypothetical husband would “throw some sperm up there”?

After seeing how obese he got, I'm genuinely concerned why his parents thought it was a good idea to broadcast his obesity to the world rather than help him privately. They're humiliating him for views. It's so emotionally abusive. If he's binge eating due to stress, it's not going to help him lose weight at all.

I feel terrible for Jazz, but I actually think the show has unintentionally ended up serving the "gender critical" side. It was supposed to promote "child transgenderism," and instead it's shown how damaging it is to mess with a child's mind, body and natural development, and how crazy and irresponsible all the adults caught up in the gender ideology cult are. Everyone I know who has watched it has reacted with horror and alarm.

Also, unfortunately for Jazz, the show has been a master class in bad parenting that's shown how to raise an innocent child to develop personality traits that will not serve him well in life. Though I feel human sympathy for Jazz, he's grown up to have a personality and behaviors that IMHO make him pretty unlikeable and insufferable.

It sounds like they're already trying to downplay the problems caused by transitioning such a young child. I don't watch the show (I don't want to give TLC the views), but I've heard the episode that premiered a few days ago (?) has the crazy mom confronting some streamer who dared to suggest that the surgery screwed him up and that he was placed on blockers at way too young of an age. I suppose they're trying to suppress the narrative now so people don't walk away thinking maybe this wasn't such a good thing after all.

See, I think the spoiling was part of the abuse. Distract him from the way you're abusing him by indulging him in other things. It's a common abuse technique, really.

Beyond the abuse, I also think his brain may be genuinely stunted in development.

Yup: people enjoying this stuff are just not so secretly happy that someone else is having it worse than them. Like, hey I might be x and y, but at least I am not a member of a creepy family with undertones of incest and pedophilia (which, horrifyingly enough, is a description of both the Jennings and the Duggars).

People who watched bearded women, people with malformations, conjoined twins or dwarves performing in circus last century likely had the same thoughts. The only difference is that they were loud and proud in pointing at those people and laughing at them, we do the same but more subtly, so that we can sell it as something virtuous or academical. I guess we got "sophisticated". 🙄

The ones exploiting these people are the same, though: greedy assholes who are only interested in selling a product according to what is trendy at the moment, no matter how morally bankrupt it is.

If I can be a little more morbid here; in many old style “freak” shows, they were people born with unusual bodies that had very few prospects. Occasionally the shows actually gave them a community and a living they otherwise wouldn’t have had. (Check out some history of Tom Thumb, and Sarasota FL). And they were born into a much crueler world than today.

These shows almost do the reverse. The Dugger kids actually haven’t made money from the show. Jim Bob doesn’t pay them, even as adults, he has them down as “volunteers”, in that they are “promoting the church”. Jill Dugger had to Sue to get a little bit of money for the show named after her and Jesse. Now it’s a struggle for many of them to get out because they’re dependent on Jim Bob Dugger.

Jazz Jennings was born a normal kid with a normal body. The show displayed the mutilation of that child’s body and separated him from community. He’s the prop of his family and others. He doesn’t get to have relationships where he helps them, they just mooch off him. Or are sacrificed for him.

And he was born into a kinder world.

So I vote that TLC is more sinister than the old fashioned “freak” shows. Closer to that side show that kidnapped those AA twins that had albinism as children. (Another insane story, and thankfully their mother found them. The show owner had the gall to try to fight to keep them in court, but he lost. Wicked.)

We used to read this stuff in tabloids, but reality TV took "train wrecks" to a whole new level.

But I thought nobody watched TV anymore? People sure consume too much poison. I could never figure out what kept that "Keeping up with the Kardashians" show on the air. The Daily Mail thinks they're important, but they can't actually have fans, can they?

Jazz, well.... When you read about the Romans watching men fight to the death in an arena -- you think WHO would want to watch actual murders as entertainment? People enjoy watching a boy's body be butchered by surgeons as entertainment. Technology changes but the human appetite for horror hasn't changed.

I kid you not, I once watched the Duggars and envied them.

I was a lonely teenager overwhelmed with highschool, had no support whatsoever. Duggar lifestyle seemed heavenly to me: always having company of sisters & never having to worry about academic success was the biggest attraction :( looking back I realise how damaged I was back then.

Sadly, I think these shows can attract very vulnerable audience who seeks escape from real life into a different way of living. I think kids might actually get an idea that transgenderism/religious fundamentalism=solution to their suffering

You know, I had this exact thought the other day. People have a lot of morbid curiosity about how SRS actually works in practice. I think I learned the basics from South Park when I was about 16...
