It's a big achievement for a black Muslim woman to break through in a very red, pretty white, very Christian state in the US. It makes me sad she can't just be a black woman who is also a Muslim. Cause that is a real big deal in this state. I just feel sad for her.

Wait, so Turner is non-binary but also goes by "she" and refers to herself as a woman?

"For them to be able to see a Muslim woman that’s elected and serving at the legislature is going to be huge because it’s just so important to see people who look like you doing great things," she said.

I thought the whole point of "non-binary" was that these people believe they're neither male nor female, not a man or a woman. And yet here she is calling herself a woman.

"As a child, I honestly remember having conversations with my mom where I thought that things would just be better if I was white, or if I was just different in some way, shape or form," Turner said.

It's like some of these people get so close, but are still so far off the mark. Hasn't it ever occurred to her that a black person wishing to be white because of racism is driven by the same impulse as a woman wishing to be a non-woman because of sexism?

I see "non-binary woman" all the time which makes things simple IMO.

Just another "oh, ok, you're a woman uncomfortable with gender....ok, so are most of us".

That last quote is pretty astounding. Self Aware Wolves much, she is sooo close!

Another proof that it’s fucked up that transracialism is sooooooo wrong, but transgenderism and declaring oneself non-binary is A-OK.

If she’s non-binary, why didn’t she also declare herself non-racial, so she wouldn’t be confined to the assumptions and prejudices about her race?

Where's the people who always says it's just white people claiming this shit, lol.

Ah, how progressive. Not girly, so I guess I'm not a woman. Though apparently still uses she/her pronouns. So. Why even bother claim to be non-binary.

When you're non-binary and Muslim how do you decide whether to wear a hijab? The weather?

She opted out of patriarchal womanhood, so she doesn’t have to wear hijab. Isn’t it obvious? /s

She's wearing a head scarf in the picture of her. Pretty clear she's not actually non-binary.

There are actually quite a few Muslim women in the United States who don't veil. Probably how she gets away with it.

why are nonbinary people always so obviously binary? would anyone see this woman and think, hmmm...man? woman? duck? fish?

[–] Terfest_Shadow 9 points (+9|-0)

Because it's literally impossible to not clock someone as being one sex or the other, even if you can't tell which one it is. We're evolved to do so but people want to pretend we're not.

They're always like 1000 times more feminine than I could ever be, even many of the ones who outright claim to be men.

[–] no- 14 points (+14|-0)

Exactly. I wouldn't mind it if the term nonbinary was used as a synonym for androgynous or gender nonconforming, but nonbinary people are rarely androgynous at all, they change their pronouns and that's it. It doesn't make sense.

I think for them it has something to do with not identifying with the behavior or “social role” or sexual orientation of their sex...which, is what exactly for people supposedly so progressive?

[–] no- 14 points (+14|-0)

They're basically implying that everyone else is a walking stereotype of femininity or masculinity. I don't know about you guys, but I've never met a human being who fits perfectly into sexist stereotypes.

I'm surprised that this happened in Oklahoma of all places

[–] Researcher1536 7 points (+7|-0)

This is my current state. Yeah, it's surprising, but there is a small far left woke vein in the state, mainly in OKC and Norman. It's still a deeeeeeeeeply red and ass backwards hell hole state.

[–] blahblahgcer 10 points (+10|-0)

Ikr? Like this wouldn't be surprising if it were Washington or Oregon, but Oklahoma? Gender specialness ideology must have spread more than I thought.
