Self-aware TIMs and TIFs, and some detransitioners as well, downplay the role that porn played in their transition. There's definitely an understandable shame to it, and they'd like to explain how their thinking became so warped in a more sympathetic light. Especially if they're worried that others will say "that's on you, then." ESPECIALLY especially when that's true.

Here's the gist of it:

Yeah, I mean, porn played some role I guess. But feminists focus way too much on that. Here's a HUGE ass list of things that everybody else goes through that proves porn wasn't the big factor. Yes, I watched it for hours a day and got kinda obsessed, but that wasn't why I transitioned, really. I'll admit it got to the point where I didn't watch anything BUT porn but dammit, it's too simplistic to say it was porn!

I've only seen one TIM, the infamous James Shupe, admit that the whole thing was a terrible porn addiction. He's gone back to his old ways but during a lucid period, he gave some frank, useful insight into how porn influenced him. It squared more with what I'd observed for years.

Benji, an ex-TIF, was also very honest about how she was exposed to too much porn at 14. Tumblr groups then groomed her to hate her own body and mannerisms, since she was a natural butch. She wasn't really into porn, but couldn't explain why, because porn was supposed to be beautiful and empowering, right? So while it was depressing to watch, she wanted to be a Good Queer Person and be supportive of those who loved it. Even allyship of porn is not good for you, and can lead to warped thinking.

To anyone lurking here that gets touchy about the porn factor: if you were exposed to it as a child, I view that as sexual abuse of you, not by you. I hold you accountable for your adult wrong-doings, but not how you were taken advantage of when you were 12.

And while there are a bunch of things that contribute to this trans craze, I believe it would actually be a good thing if porn addiction really is the driving force. It means you are not genetically defective, you are not destined to be this way, and porn, like other addictive substances, can be avoided. We brought smoking rates of teens down significantly in the US. Protecting kids is totally doable.

Obviously, the motives are different between TIMs and TIFs. TIMs are pursuing their pornographic ideals. TIFs are usually trying to run away from them, though they too are enamored by other porny fantasies like Yaoi.

It's just not a coincidence that the more widespread porn became, the faster this social contagion spread. As porn producers compete for clicks, they have to get stranger, weirder, and more disgusting. It's just marketing and capitalism. They must stand out from the crowd if they want to be noticed. Once you realize that's the only reason why porn producers bother with this particular paraphilia, it loses its mystique.

Obviously porn is not the only factor. In highly homophobic societies, you will find more HSTS TIMs. These are just gay men in a very dark place. But HSTS TIMs usually go on a body-destroying quest to meet pornographic ideals of womanhood. They aren't interested in women outside stereotypes they think will charm men. Even if they do want to bake in a pretty half-apron, it's not about the physical reality of womanhood. It's about being a sexy stereotype men will like. So porn is definitely the how-to guide HSTS TIMs think they need. Combine that with the obligatory venture into prostitution and porn, you've got yet another man who is ruled by porn.

TIFs tend to be butch lesbians that have been bullied and harassed to their breaking point. Buck Angel describes her young adulthood as evidence why being a butch wasn't for her. But if you hear her talk, her therapists were right: she was a very masculine-identified woman in a world that wanted feminine women, and punished those who didn't obey. She was hounded every day until she started to pass as male. But through her career alone, she also is porn-possessed. She mimics gym rat gay men as a job. And sure, she's only one person. But I've seen too many TIFs wearing bondage gear in public, or are in BDSM social groups, or into yaoi, to not see this porn connection. If you've decided to become an "activist" representing paraphilic groups, you've definitely got porn on the brain. And no, porn cannot be redeemed or salvaged by making it "body inclusive" of overweight people, disabled people, minorities of any sort, etc. That's another common TIF delusion. They think porn is so important that it should be expanded, not done away with.

Are there any TIFs or TIMs who have zero porn in their lives? Pretty much no. It's present in every single one of them. They're like a bunch of chain smokers in the 1700's wondering why their lungs are failing, and smoking more to purify the wee little beasties within.

Trans-identified people come from all walks of life and not everyone has the same experiences. Some have autism. Some have trauma. Some are GNC from early childhood. But inappropriate sexual exposure occurs in every one of them. It crops up in their stories every time.

I know a knee-jerk argument would be that plenty of people are exposed to porn early and they don't trans out. Fair enough. Those people still face negative consequences like inceldom and bad relationships, or even criminal behavior. And were they exposed to the same amounts of porn, the same sorts of porn? Even smoking, which is bad for everyone, will impact people to different degrees. It depends on their pre-existing health, how much they smoke, etc. But when nearly ALL victims of lung cancer smoke, that implies that smoking is causing it. Even if someone else smoked to the age of 90 and died in a car accident.

I don't think the trans community could produce even one member that had zip zilch nada exposure to porn.

I'm a big fan of TT Exulansic, but I don't by her AGP cuttlefish theory, implying AGP is genetic. Large male cuttlefish and female cuttlefish actually are fooled by the smaller males mimicking females. No one is fooled by a TIM, not even the porny HSTS ones. It doesn't translate to humans. And if it were true, there ought to be porn-free AGPs and HSTS walking around. There aren't even any TIFs free of its influence.

If my theory is right and trans mania really can be boiled down to porn, that would be good news for everyone. You don't have to blow up your career or family; you don't have to destroy your body. We can take serious steps to punish those who expose kids to porn. We can treat porn the way we do tobacco.

There's the embarrassment of admitting that you aren't so special after all. You don't have a unique, rare, interesting brain. There's also the embarrassment of realizing that this is not a beautiful, misunderstood condition, but an out-of-control vice. But it's also really good news that there's a way out. Not only that, there's a way to improve people's lives and relationships with prevention of porn.

Anyway. After watching this thing play out for several years, it looks to me like this is a ramification of porn. Not out of political bias because of what porn does to women- I genuinely do believe this is the root of the whole thing. Perhaps I'm ridiculously optimistic but I don't see much evidence to say that there's anything innate about gender dysphoria.

HSTS TIMs and TIFs would still have to contend with the homophobia that pressures them to transition. But instead of driving them to find sanctuary in prostitution, porn, and paraphilic groups, we could work on real solutions that don't involve body mutilation or fantasy thinking.

I think you're on to something here. The sexualization of the idea of transgenderism has been around for ages, but increased access to it correlates to this boom in trans-identifying males in particular; and it seems like a lot of TIFs "found themselves" through websites like Tumblr and other communities focused on the objectification of gay men.

The Japanese anime porn seems to be popular among both TIMs and TIFs. The former identify with the cute little cartoon girl (who is also completely into sex but looks about seven) and the latter identify with the gay men in gay porn. Or that's what I have read. I have never watched any so this might be wrong. Still, the anime pic in a Twitter profile is almost instantly telling me the person is in the trans cult as a congregant.
