He supported Rowling; he will be missed.
This is devastating news ! I grew up watching Harry Potter with him playing Hagrid and my dad introduced me to The Young Ones and Comic Strip where he would star in , his acting and comedic ability was brilliant, he will be missed
One of my first abiding memories of him is from one of the Comic Strip films where he's striding along a stone jetty thing with waves crashing on him like he's a mountain.
EEEEE thank you! God that is dangerous. It's longer than I remember, too.
RIP
I've seen way too many comments today basically shrugging over his death because he supported Rowling.
Actively celebrating it even. TRAs are unbelievably vile people.
Disgusting. They can't even say they disagreed with him but they liked his performance as Hagrid (which they all did).
:(
He was a decent human being, from all I know, and was one of the few Harry Potter actors who fit their roles perfectly.
Why do they die so young? Alan Rickman wasn't that old either, and from what I know, neither lived the kind of life that might be blamed for famous actors dying young (alcohol and other drugs and excessive partying and all that).
Oh Robbie had a big drink problem on and off. Iron constitution when young, could put it away by the gallon. And relatedly very overweight. It's not a surprise that he'd not make the oldest of bones since his heart was probably working overtime much of his life. But it's so sad.
Oh wow, he was just a few years older than my dad.
I've only seen him in one other thing besides the Harry Potter films. He was in some Huck Finn movie and played one of the pair of scammers Huck met during his journey. I had no idea it was him until I IMDB'd him.
He was a great dramatic actor. Dying to find his series Cracker where he played a forensic psychologist. Not a nice character but a compelling one.
Had it VHS back in the day. Alas, no longer. I'll let you know if I can find it online anywhere.
You can get it on ITV player, if you're in the UK?
One year older than my dad actually. (Close to two years older, as my dad was born in November.)
Not important, just going for precision there, I guess. It's hard when your parents' generation starts going.
Oh no. I even liked him in Nuns on the Run.
I heard about it earlier and was wondering when a thread was gonna pop up about it.
Thereβs another piece of my childhood just gone.
He made the character, he really did. He definitely seemed like a fantastic guy, someone who could have been your uncle.
And he was adamant about speaking up and backing up Rowling, which the little brats Radcliffe and Watson actively went against. And then they spoke out and said heβll be sorely missed?
They pay their dues for him, while they actively bite at the things Coltrane had backed Rowling up on.
Yes! He was a lot more than Hagrid, though by all accounts he was happy to have made something kids would like forever.
I'm heartbroken, for real. He seemed like such a down to earth celebrity and Hagrid was one of my favorite characters. And he's an ally to our cause. Double whammy π₯
