Anyone else notice that lately the Best comments (the auto arrangement of comments on this site) to a lot of posts are quickly deleted? Are there members who feel they can only comment by stealth, and they have to delete their comments soon after posting? Not sure if these comments were deleted by Admins and Mods since they're always followed by replies. It makes me wonder if there are troll commenters here.

Unfortunately, currently, if a user makes a comment then deletes it right away, no one can vote on it and the best algorithm sorts it high, as if it hasn't been seen.

It's not terribly infrequent that people comment then realize right away that they'd have rather not. However, it's best to try to think about it before posting, because this is the open internet and third parties can collect comments and posts right away after posting.

I have done this by mistake from my comments page, because I was not paying proper attention, and was baffled at how I did so. I have also deleted my comment immediately, as I was embarrassed at what I had written. I am working on both behaviors.

Having said this, I did not participate in the threads proudcatlady linked below.

I have not noticed this. Do you have any examples? It might be best to reach out to the mods if you notice one to confirm it was a user deleting it rather than a rule violation.

I heard from Girl Undone it is a known issue. But, thank you for the examples. I hope one of the more technical types can look into this.

Interesting. So it could be troll accounts - possibly working to quickly accrue up-votes and thereby gain access to invites? But why would they then want to delete their comments? And do the points accumulated with up-votes also get deleted if the comment is deleted?

They don't.

I wouldn't be surprised if some users deleted their comment history routinely. Odds are good that lurking TRAs have something captured anyway, and I think the mods recommended using alt accounts to spread things out but I can understand the feeling of safety that comes from purging every once in a while.
