I took a gender studies class that included a full module on cartoons. I didn't have to watch any anime or read manga but we read a lot of commentary on it. I wish I still had the content. The trans narrative was often front and center.

There's material for lots of PhD theses in the rise of people online who believe that Japanese anime cartoon children are valid and realistic role models about transition or about being a woman. Rather horrifying, in some sense, that so many live their lives only online, or so it sounds to me.
