I'm so glad that show started and stopped when it did. So many of their skits wouldn't have been done today.

This reminds me about how the bookstore, In Other Words, where these skits were filmed wrote a blog post in 2016 complaining about “ trans-antagonistic and trans-misogynist Fred Armisen” and stop allowing filming at the store.

The Women and Women First segments that are filmed at In Other Words are trans-antagonistic and trans-misogynist and have only become more offensive as the show goes on. ‘LOL Fred Armisen in a wig and a dress’ is a deeply shitty joke whose sole punchline throws trans femmes under the bus by holding up their gender presentation for mockery and ridicule. In a world where trans femmes – particularly Black trans women – are being brutalized and murdered on a regular basis for simply daring to exist, dude in a dress jokes are lazy, reactionary, and actively harmful. They’re also just straight up not funny.

The bookstore closed in 2018 due to lack of funds. In it’s closing statement:

Though In Other Words rallied enough support and volunteer effort to keep going, the statement posted on the center website says the periodic discussions of closing because of lack of money and people "isn't sustainable, especially emotionally, for the people who come here and work to provide this space as a resource to Portland Feminist communities. Even if funds poured in, and masses of people showed up in response to this announcement, we would not continue our tenure here."

The statement continues: "We cannot continue because we know reform does not work. The current volunteers and board members stepped into and took over a space that was founded on white, cis feminism (read: white supremacy). It's really difficult, actually, impossible, for us to disentangle from that foundational ideology. Volunteers and board members tried to reform and re-envision the organization, and have found it unattainable to do, especially with so little resources. We have experienced this as a very real reminder that reform doesn't work. Patriarchy, White Supremacy, Capitalism cannot be reformed and ever serve the people. Abolition is the goal."

I never even saw Fred Armisen being a dude in a dress as being part of the joke. I just saw an extremely accurate representation of older radfems from 80s bookstores of my youth to be honest.

Was there the same backlash against Carrie Brownstein in a binder as Lance???

[–] Bread 15 points (+15|-0)

Complete agree! The cross dressing aspect wasn’t part of the joke. I cannot recall anything specifically about Carrie Brownstein as Lance — most of the pushback was about Fred Armisen.

TBH — I think if this sketch tried to air now there would be way more pushback. I’ve noticed any sort of cross dressing in sketch comedy are called transphobic especially men dressed as women. Hell, even Adam Driver brought it during his opener in SNL in Jan 2020.

Oh that's super interesting. I looked it up. I think that's part of the joke. He wasn't chill, he was offended by the skit.

OMG I love how that resignation letter reads like a modern Portlandia skit! Right down to the libfems denouncing "White Feminists" and showing deference to the 10 million trans-women of color who are murdered every day. 😆

the 10 million trans-women of color who are murdered every day. 😆

Ha!

Honestly sounds like a Portlandia joke reading those statements, haha.

a space that was founded on white, cis feminism (read: white supremacy).

Has got to be the most stereotypical sentence I've ever read from the lefty libfem crowd.

So TRAs took over a feminist space and destroyed it and then played the victim about that?

Sounds familiar.

These fucking people exploited unpaid labor yet they have the gall to blame capitalism and white supremacy for their failure? And of course they hate the show that made them somewhat famous.

And while I didn't like Portlandia I don't think Fred Armisen was playing a TIM. I think he crosdressed to play a woman.

Hmm, "crossdressed to play a woman". I think I've found why the TIMs felt his portrayal hit too close to home.

That's what i thought too. I remember my mom wanting to watch a couple episodes with me to see if i liked it and i just thought Armisen was playing a woman, like some joke about lesbians being masculine.
