Female characters have to appeal to the male gaze, hence they can't look too much like animals. It's a bit troubling that this is even the case in animation aimed at children.

World of Warcraft had male trolls ... and green skinned human women filled the role of "female trolls". It came to light they'd previously experimented with female characters that actually looked like trolls, but the (presumably male) beta testers didn't like it.

Because video games are mostly just virtual porn. It was very hard to get away from it as a female gamer, even with more "progressive" companies like BioWare. Part of the reason I just don't game anymore.

I still remember how so many men were upset at the new Lola Bunny redesign complaining the she isn't as sexy as before. Like bruh, she is a bunny... A cartoon bunny 😑

The sheer ratio of male to female characters in children's film and TV programming, animated or otherwise, is absurd.

Boys and girls alike learn from an early age that male is the norm and female is a variation (if not a deviation) from the norm. They cling to this lesson well into adulthood.

When my son was young, his school participated in a discount coupon program for eight different films shown on local screens, every last one of them featuring a male protagonist. I commented on this to another mom.

"Hmm," she responded. "I hadn't noticed that."

If anything it should be the opposite. Male animals tend to be far more “beautiful” and flashy than their female counterparts depending on the animal and species. Ducks, peacocks, lions, cats (in my opinion), deer, etc.

Right? With nature being all confused by climate change, I got to watch a male grouse do his mating dance a couple weeks ago (he was blocking my cottage road lol). Soooo pretty and elaborate. Lady grouse blends in with the underbrush and I almost didn't see her.

Because it seems like in every damn species except for ours, males have to actually ATTRACT females.

Why do you feel cats exemplify this? Male cats are more likely to be orange and less likely to be tricolor. I feel the opposite way as a result. Orange cats are my (and other people I’ve talked to) least favorite color for a cat. Meanwhile calicos and tortoiseshells are just gorgeous

I thinks their larger and slightly more muscular bodies is why I think they’re more beautiful. I have a gray male cat who is an absolute beauty. Anecdotal evidence, but I do believe male cats are more affectionate. That’s another reason why I think they’re prettier.

I’ve heard that male cats are more affectionate as well. Anecdotal but I almost never have seen male cats in shelters so I wonder if that’s because they are more desirable. I didn’t realize cats were visibly sexually dimorphic apart from coloration so I’ll pay attention to that. I love all cats.

I heard that calicos are usually female and orange ones are usually male, but besides that I don't know.

Though every so often I do think about how Coco was surprisingly good rep. She's a hacker, she's much smarter than Crash, and she has a good acceleration stat.

Yeah, I use to watch the cartoon as a kid and the CGI version just creeps me out. I could never watch it.

Ugh, ditto. The old 80s cartoon is still cute and holds up relatively well (aside from some....questionable elements in the Chipmunk Adventure movie). But the modern CGI stuff is sheer nightmare fuel

I feel the same way, I can't deal with CGI versions of cartoons I liked as a kid!
