The woke love to “noble savage” indigenous people, don’t they? Next thing they’ll be telling us that indigenous tribes never warred with each other because whitey invented war.

This is nothing but stealth racism.

The woke are ignorant and liars.

[–] EvenMoreMinty 3 points (+3|-0)

I've brought up this exact problem before, only to be fobbed off. The weird push to have indigenous people all painted as "sweet, quiet, gentle, nothing ever bad in any way" only serves to make them seem like some kind of mythical creature (The other approach of them being savage and cruel is bullshit racist too). Learning/hearing from indigenous people, themselves, is much better. They not afraid to mention how there were good and bad, gentle and cruel, and that different groups had different customs. Makes them much more human.

Sorry, I just feel it should be indigenous people that teach the absolute majority and most-listened to indigenous history, because everyone else (cough white academics cough) seem to only paint them as mysterious caricatures.

I'm laughing at the idea men have self control or give a shit about justice.

I was watching a programme about an indigenous community where women did all of the child raising, teaching, house building, house maintenance, growing of the crops, catching the animals they ate and food preparation. Men meanwhile 'went hunting' for bigger game, which they almost never caught. The presenter wanted to stress that the men bought the community the 'prestige task' of not being very good at hunting.

There are your gender roles across the world. Women do all the drudgery and essential work, men do the fun tasks and get all the credit.

[–] boogerita 12 points (+12|-0)

Yup, this is similar to my tribe. Men did war, hunting, smoking, and gambling.

[–] Onna_XX 11 points (+11|-0) Edited

Yes, I didn't even note the ridiculous traits given to males and females at first, since I was captured by the headline. I've seen the "animal nature" of men more often than I'd like. Edit: For typo.

This is 100% racism, 100% cultural appropriation. I've always hated the inevitable "buT tHe twO-sPiriT anD HiJrA" segment of every TRA's argument. No, you are appropriating another culture that you don't understand to enable your identity crisis. I'm not from a culture that has any distinct historical "third gender", so I don't pretend to understand it, but from my reading of cultures that do, these concepts are so hard for Westerners to grasp that giving them an English name is a massive oversimplification. I did grow up speaking a non-English language, so I understand how other languages have nuances and meanings that no amount of English words could capture. It's so disgraceful for these people to use a term that doesn't even encapsulate what it translates from, to steal from another culture, for validation. This whole movement is racist on so many different levels, and I'm baffled that liberals rarely talk about it, for a bunch of people who claim to care so much about POC.

I have lived in Pakistan where Hijra is a big thing. Hijra are considered interex and something you are born as, not some woke identity you take on later. Also, while Hijra often dress as female and do the flamboyant show of heels and makeup like TIMs do.. they never claim to be female. Its like they make their own spaces instead of invading existing ones. Hijra have their own communities. Its like a separate entity of their own. They look like non passing TIMs though.. actual photo of a hijra : https://i.ndtvimg.com/video/images/vod/medium/2014-05/big_322631_1400911327.jpg I believe "two spirit" is the same.. they are intersex people too

[–] Kittyrose 4 points (+4|-0)

Ugh this. I was like how is this not being cultural appropriation?

[–] Womancup 21 points (+21|-0)

That reminds me of an argument I had with a conservative wacko that claimed that marriage was invented by Judeo-Christian culture. Apparently Confucius was a Christian or, I guess in this case, white.

[–] Onna_XX 20 points (+20|-0)

Lol one of the tenants of Confucianism is submitting to the will of the husband/father, this people try to seem multicultural and woke but they just expose themselves as ignorant of other cultures, anyways a "good" stereotype is still a stereotype.

[–] Luckystar 20 points (+20|-0)

Confucianism and Daoism predate Christianity by hundreds of years and have a super strict gender binary. White wokies gonna white woke. They don't know sh!t

[–] edieandthea 18 points (+18|-0)

White civilization...fuck right off and read about footbinding. The grandmother of one of my best friends growing up had bound feet, it is a misogynist atrocity with living victims. As is female genital mutilation and other abuses across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East today.

[–] Willow9 10 points (+10|-0)

This. Exactly.

I've seen self proclaimed feminists say that the white/european capitalistic men invented patriarchy.

They simply ignore misogynist practices all around the world like the terrible foot binding and FGM, just like you said, that have been around way way before capitalism. With this argument they stop women from criticizing misogyny inside the black movement or the left. Absolutely a disservice to the cause.

[–] Onna_XX 17 points (+17|-0)

I hate how they have co-opted two-spirit, it's a somewhat vague title convering multiple different concepts of gender/work distribution roles by many different tribes so differences of course occur, but generally it was for men to take on a woman's work "role" (often along side their male work) and less commonly women taking on the male work role (hmm I wonder why) so it's very sex and gender role based.

[–] Onna_XX 30 points (+30|-0)

And to add to this, it makes me extra annoyed when people act like Native American tribes were some sort of gender utopia because I have Metis ancestry on my mother's side and so many of the women are listed in the census as "Ojibwe woman", "Menominee woman" etc with no name, the men of their tribes had no issue with selling or trading off their women as a trade deal with the French.

[–] Ronja 19 points (+19|-0)

One patriarchy meets another patriarchy.

[–] Onna_XX 13 points (+13|-0)

Yes and to this day native women are victimized at a high rate, as we can see by the number of missing native women in the US and Canada, and it's not just because of the effects of European colonialism, thought that does play a large part with the levels of alcoholism seen in native people, and prostitution levels as well, but we can't disregard the sexism within tribal communities and rates of spousal and child abuse by tribal men against tribal women as well.

[–] Bread 14 points (+14|-0) Edited

Alok shared this on his IG today and people in the comments are just worshiping him for educating them. Eye roll The whole slide show is nonsense, claims that the concept of female and male was invented in the 19th century by Dr. Mary Walter to advance white women supremacy and links the book “The Biopolitics of Feeling: Race, Sex, and Science in the Nineteenth Century” by Kyla Schuller.

[–] Onna_XX 17 points (+17|-0) Edited

Of course, a European women came up with this in their view, in the midst of European women being barred from voting, working outside the home and being treated for bogus health conditions like hysteria.

[–] rad-sage-fem 6 points (+6|-0) Edited

I saw this earlier and was hoping someone would post this. The absurdity of this argument blows my mind.

[–] EvenMoreMinty 1 points (+1|-0)

They're really trying to push the "white women invented everything bad" even to the point of going "white women oppress white men", huh

[–] Mikkal 12 points (+12|-0)

Western Civilization has has consistent values across all countries and across the entirety of it's existing. Victorian Era? Roaring 20s? Puritans? Hippies? Why - they are all exactly the same, no variation through the eras....

Just joking of course.

The truth is the definition of masculine and feminine changes significantly, throughout Western Civilization, over time. Also - if they are critiquing Western Civ why don't they call it that?

[–] Mafalda 12 points (+12|-0)

Yes, white people have done some shit. Inventing sex was not one of them.

[–] EvenMoreMinty 4 points (+4|-0)

Before white people (tm) explained the concepts of sex, people used to just wait until babies rained from the sky and would run around with blankets to catch them :'( /jk

[–] Duchess 8 points (+8|-0)

I'm Indian American, and let me tell you, Indian society has very strict gender roles, especially for women. The existence of Hijras indicates that men are allowed to deviate (somewhat) from normalized roles but there is no equivalent for women. Also, while Hijras are legally recognized as a third gender, no one is ever making the claim that they are women or female. They have created their own community and garnered support without detracting on women's rights issues. Even with all this Hijras still face discrimination. I think that acting like gender roles are a white, western concept completely misses the point.
