Is anyone else just hopelessly depressed about how Doctor Who is being ruined by all this nonsense? For a long time the show was my only source of happiness and I wanted it to last forever. But my Doctor (Matt Smith) has been gone for years and tras have started creeping into the show.

Does this affect anyone else like it does me?

I bowed out some time around Capaldi' s tenure. It wasn' t for trans issues or wokeness, it was because the writing was terrible, the stories uninteresting and I didn' t like how they made everything be about Clara (a character I liked in the beginning but who became progressively more annoying and "mary-suish" with the passing of time).

I remember watching maybe a couple of episodes of 13, realized that the writing and characterization was even worse, that it was going to be 3 years of woke girl power (which means that 13 was going to be a token and the poster girl for liberal feminism' s so-called empowerment) and related nonsense, and stayed out. It seems to me like it was the lowest point, but then I heard about the androginous black gay new Doctor and his trans companion and I realized that the same kind of treatment was going to be used for this new Doctor as well. Possibly even worse since it seems like they' re trying to cover all bases at once, especially given that the show runner has been a TRA for quite some time.

I am sad about it, but I didn' t grow up with it and I am not emotionally involved, it' s just a show that was cute once and was then ruined by politics.

Yeah, I started losing interest with Capaldi and Clara. I just didn’t care for either character or their relationship. I liked Clara with Matt Smith though.

Jodi had a ton of potential, she could have been another Smith or Tennant but they ruined her. There were too many companions too soon, it was more about their relationships with each other than with her, the whole Fam! thing was beyond cringe, and the episodes felt disconnected and preachy. Jodi and Yaz would have been amazing together.

It has really been getting worse since Capaldi joined. The writing just isn't what it used to be. They haven't stayed true to the character and heart of the show since Moffat left. Some lore changes and inconsistency in a long running show is to be expected but it's gotten so bad it feels like they haven't watched any of the old series, and it's possible they haven't. Even the Doctor's core values and personal dilemmas are nowhere to be found. It's just more vapid entertainment now.

But who cares about the values of non-violent resistance to power when you can just genocide your enemies and call it a day.

I just watch the old ones (Drs 2-5) over and over. I’m also listening to the audiobook novelizations. One of the best things about the early Drs was the non-focus on romance. Brains over brawn, curiosity, snobbish intellectualism, and an unyielding moral code. With campy effects and awkward costuming. Just about perfect.

Yes! It started as a children’s show and that’s what it should have stayed. Introducing romance was such a horrible mistake.

I personally love River with the Doctor but only because she’s such a well written character. If he’d been with anyone else I probably would agree with you.

I loved her first story but none of the ones that followed. Mostly I liked Alex Kingston from seeing her in ER.

I’ve seen some of those and love them, especially 4 and 5 :) The Doctor’s moral code is my favorite thing about him I think.

I guess they're desperate for the hype they had with Tennant and Smith (to a lesser degree). Except it was clearly more about the actors than whatever gimmicks they had going on. Obviously the writing has never been stellar (in nuwho anyway, never watched old who) and it's only getting worse. They're hoping the zoomers will come back but I doubt this is going to be making the TikTok rounds.

I haven't watched in years, do you remember around which doctor it was introduced?

There was one weird scene during 11th Doctor (a trans horse. I kid you not. But I hated the episode in general). 12 was talking about how since Timelords can change from male to female they don’t care about gender much and I was rolling my eyes the whole time. Missy made some dumb joke about genders. And apparently there’s gonna be a trans companion with 14.

Well fuck, I guess I'm not missing much.

I recommend most of 11 and I’ve heard some of 12 is good. I saw some of 13 but the writing was crap so I stopped. Beyond that I ain’t watching more.

I gave up on it years ago. I grew up on Baker and Pertwee reruns. Didn’t think much of Davison, noped out when C Baker took over, saw maybe one episode of wossname who replaced him, loathed the film (McGann had potential but they turned the Master into a Terminator wannabe and having the Doctor kissing someone was an unfortunate sign of things to come). Really didn’t like the idea of starting the series again, didn’t bother with Eccleston. I liked Tennant, couldn’t stand Smith (sorry, OP), was very disappointed with Capaldi, watched less than an episode of Whittaker. Even before all the trans crap the stories had got far too dark and doomful, and an ongoing romance for the Doctor, just no.

Lmao. You’re good, not everyone likes the same Doctors. So long as you don’t outright insult him I’m not offended.
I agree, where did all the stories filled with hope go? Why was everything so dark and gloomy? :( That’s one reason I liked Matt actually, is he was a very cheerful version of the Doctor. Loved having fun and making friends.

That’s true, he was a contrast to the gloomy Tennant! What did they call them - the Doctor who couldn’t forget and the Doctor who couldn’t remember? (Having the destruction of Gallifrey in the backstory, I mean fuck no. Not to mention flying Daleks ffs. I miss the days of jokes about their plans for conquering the universe being stopped by encountering a flight of stairs.)
