I can see them being around a long long time ago because we didn't have much as a society going on yet, just something innocent to past the time. But now? We all know how toxic and fake they. The girls get false teeth and spray tans and wigs and heavily sexualized clothing and dance routines. The parents turn their girls into miniature women.

It also destroys the girls mentally with all the pressure and the heavy emphases on appearance and on winning. I get that it's purely for the parents pleasure of having their kid win and living vicariously through them, but still can't they see how gross and unhealthy it is?

I don't know, it's just weird how their still around.

Because rich male pedophiles and their gross accomplice wives fund them.

There are no depths too low for abusive women to sink to when pandering to men. None at all.

That is a very good question! They’ve been banned in France for almost a decade, and I applaud them for that one.

The United States (and probably other places as well) certainly seems to condone and even celebrate this trashy form of child abuse and pedo grooming (99.99% of victims are girls, of course- maybe that’s why they don’t care as much about it).

These poor girls are never allowed to be children, never allowed to play or get their clothes dirty. As you said, they’re always caked and sprayed and glued with makeup, spray tans, fake eyelashes, wigs, and “flippers.” From toddlerhood, they’re trained in swimsuit competitions where they have so much makeup on that it makes them look 20, or aliens.

Same for a lot of these “dance mom” things where toddlers are put into “sexy” costumes and makeup gyrating in sexualized dances. So creepy and gross, all of this crap. It should be banned everywhere.

I don't get it either. It's not a cutest little girl pageant even, though that would be bad enough. It's a sexiest woman contest. For kids.

I’m in the UK and (thankfully) I don’t think they’re really a thing here. It’s so disturbing to have a little girl, spray her skin, paint her face, change everything about her...what even is the message here? You must be a silent, pretty ornament whilst others sit in judgement? I can’t imagine how anyone could sit and watch this, let alone tell little girls they aren’t as pretty as their peers.

I remember years ago that programme Toddlers and Tiaras...Basically televised child abuse and the embodiment of every possible way to damage your kid. The “winning” girls were almost always blonde haired and blue eyed iirc - which seems like a disturbing cherry on top of a very disturbing cake.

An 8 year old pageant participant’s mother regularly injected her with Botox.

Her mom defended it by saying all the other pageant moms were doing it and that her daughter was “complaining about wrinkles on her forehead.”

The mom also had her daughter’s whole body waxed. The little 8 year old girl says: “I don’t think it’s ladylike to have hair.”

They need to be banned. That's one thing TRAs argue that I agree with- if drag should be banned for kids so should child pageants. They are both forms of child sexual exploitation.

It seems like it should also be asked: why does religion still exist?

As Karl Marx used to say, "Religion is the opium of the people."

Did you say

false teeth

Yes. Look at pageant “flippers”.

Because god forbid you see a 7-year-old with a missing baby tooth in her smile when she’s in a pageant!! /s

Child beauty pageants are to children as trans children are to TRA mothers.

They meet a need in the mothers of these kids. It is not for the children’s emotional health needs.

The parent feeds off of the attention given to the children literally and figuratively.

Behind it all is a business. For beauty pageant kids and for trans kids.

They're stuck in the 80's even down to the Dolly Parton beauty standard

I've always thought they were a bit creepy and weird and to be honest I think it's creepier and weirder that they generally don't have or allow public audiences (because of course the only people who would want to watch other people's kids parade around like that are pedos so it makes sense, but on the other hand then what's the point of a private pageant? Similarly when I refuse the airport pornoscanner I always request a public patdown because who knows what they might do to you behind closed doors).

But anyway, I would imagine the main justification for the mothers who are not just raging narcissists is that participating in child beauty pageants prepares their little darlings for participation in adult beauty pageants (which people also love to hate for various reasons, but which nonetheless can provide tangible rewards other than a gnarly meringue of a tiara (see e.g. Diane Sawyer, Oprah Winfrey, Gretchen Carlson, a host of well-known actresses, lesser-known women who receive scholarships and financial support they would otherwise not have access to). So in their mind it's perhaps not that much different than starting their 3-year-old on violin or piano or ballet or gymnastics in the hopes that they make it big when they're older. In fact I sometimes wonder if about 40% of the criticism of child pageants isn't so much about creepy sexualization of children but rather coastal classism because the families who participate have Texan or Southern accents and a trashy "Dolly Parton" aesthetic.

I'm sure there is some classism mixed in there, but this argument feels similar to saying people opposed to child drag queens are just homophobic. I really don't care if it's backwoods yokels or overbred WASPs pushing their daughters into these competitions, it still involves sexually exploiting children and teaching girls that their intrinsic worth lies in their physical appearance.

I'd also argue that the "tangible benefits" are debatable. The overall cost of competing in these pageants is high (for both adult and child varieties), and the chance of 'winning' is slim. Maybe competing in one or two smaller pageants isn't too expensive, but competing in the beauty circuit requires an investment of time and money. And, supposedly, the actual dollar amount that the Miss America beauty queens win in scholarships is a lot lower than what is promoted by the Miss America organization. They'd probably get a better ROI by just applying for regular scholarships.

If it's too trashy for a public audience that's a good sign the entire thing is too trashy to exist.

I think that this is a really good point. Obviously, there are lots of real reasons that kid pageants are bad and creepy, but I agree that the majority (probably even more than you guess) of people "criticizing" it are actually loving feeling superior to the "trashy" moms doing it. These are the same people who love to laugh at the "made up" names for kids that lower class and, especially, black families sometimes use. America absolutely thrives on this kind of definition of self in terms of difference and perceived superiority, which I think has led to the libfem blind spot when it comes to the realities of the trans issue.

Exactly. Hating on pageant moms is often just thinly veiled misogyny. Not saying pageant moms are good, but most people feigning concern for their daughters don’t actually care about them and love shitting on women.
