The Nazi Lebensborn program kidnapped tens of thousands of children out of Eastern Europe and shipped them to Germany for re-education and adoption into German families.

The infant adoption system as we know it, and for which many governments are now quietly paying settlements, is based on this part of the Lebensborn program. I suspect that the practice of surrogacy as we’ve come to know it was based on the better known practice of finding “racially desirable” German women and breeding them to high ranking Nazis and German officers. All of this in turn has its roots in the philosophy of eugenics. And it’s all been heavily propagandized for almost a century so that most of the time people see it as a social good. When in fact all of it is unutterably evil.

Evil fuckers. Reminds me it was the same tactics that were used by Argentina's military dictatorship.

The lesson is Mothers never forget.

Wow, absolutely disgusting. Always women and children suffer, always.

Family separation, again, this time coming in and taking the children away...despicable

How is this genocide when the children are likely to be ethnic Russian, given the part of Ukraine they are from? The article didn't address that. Also, where is the adoption? The first children described were taken somewhere safe away from the fighting and given a choice between foster care or an orphanage. I get that the separation of children from parents is very stressful for everyone, but we don't know they won't be reunited. The war is far from over.

I gather that Russia has evacuated civilians from some areas completely because of the risk of further fighting. Some of those evacuees will be children who are separated from or don't have parents, like the ones in that orphanage.

The part where those kids were beaten was pretty horrible, though.

They aren’t Russian children. They are Ukrainian children with Ukrainian parents and relatives (if the Russians already killed their parents).

How Moscow grabs Ukrainian kids and makes them Russians An AP investigation shows that Russia’s effort to take Ukrainian orphans and raise as Russian is well underway. Raising children of war in another country or culture can be a marker of genocide.

Elements of the crime of Genocide

The Genocide Convention establishes in Article I that the crime of genocide may take place in the context of an armed conflict, international or non-international, but also in the context of a peaceful situation.

The latter is less common but still possible. The same article establishes the obligation of the contracting parties to prevent and to punish the crime of genocide.

The popular understanding of what constitutes genocide tends to be broader than the content of the norm under international law.

Article II of the Genocide Convention contains a narrow definition of the crime of genocide, which includes two main elements:

  1. A mental element: the "intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such"; and

  2. A physical element, which includes the following five acts, enumerated exhaustively:

    • Killing members of the group

    • Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group

    • Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part

    • Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group

    • Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group

They are most likely Russian-Ukrainian children, living in an area shelled by Ukraine since 2014, so I don't think it's that simple. I'll wait and see what happens before I decide. In the meantime I hope they're treated well in care.

Do you realise many of these children's parents have been MURDERED BY Russia??? ETA: This situation is not limited to the 'Donbas' region that was taken over by Russia in 2014, Russia has also been kidnapping and trafficking children from Mariupol, which they bombed to hell just this past Spring.

'Ethnicity' has NOTHING to do with whether it is genocide or not. Ukraine is a MULTI-ETHNIC nation and has been for its entire existence. Also genocide can be committed against people of the 'same' ethnicity as the perpetrators. The Iranian regime commits genocide against a Persian religious minority, the Baha'is. But most of them are of Iranian ethnicity, so by your definition it would not be genocide, and yet it is in fact defined as such.

Seriously, I cannot believe these comments. There's nothing to 'wait and see' here. It's clear what is going on.
