Just saying, as a young thing, I was told by a barman in a pub in the south west of England that he didn't sell women pints. I demanded two half-pints, and a pint glass, and poured the halves into the pint glass right in front of him. He rolled his eyes and pretended like he hadn't seen it.

I initially read this thinking he meant he didn't sell alcohol to women. He wouldn't sell a full pint to women? Somehow that feels even more stupid. If the cost of two half pints was greater than a single pint, I'd make a big fuss about it for sure.

Yep, apparently not uncommon in the 1980s for publicans to refuse to sell women full pints or restrict them to drinks they considered appropriately feminine. That kind of bloke is what Al Murray Pub Landlord bases his act on.
