By 1800, fashion even dictated that upper and middle class women employ male “regular” doctors for obstetrical care – a custom which plainer people regarded as grossly indecent.

This helped answer a long standing wonder I had about women who choose male gynos. So started it as one of those silly rich people things to make themselves feel superior to the poors, like spices.
