And let's not even talk about the screwed up children raised in orphanages in Romania during that time. Geez, the US right is so stupid.

I hate both the right and the left, stupidity abounds on both sides, but I generally find the right more difficult to deal with and a bit more stupid.

Not just deadly for women. ; )

Of all the disgusting, rotten, destructive communist dictators, only one got shot to death on national live television. Nicolae Ceausescu. Just something to think about, autocrats.

By 1989, Ceausescu’s brutal antiabortion policies had tragically elevated Romania’s maternal mortality rate to the highest in Europe: 87 percent of maternal deaths were attributed to complications from illegal abortion. (For perspective, in 1965, the last year abortion was legal, 20 percent of maternal deaths were due to abortion complications.) Almost 10,000 women died over the 23 years in which abortion was criminalized.

The day after the dictator’s demise, women’s bodies were liberated from the centralized grip of the state.

The legalization of abortion had an immediate effect on the number of legal abortions recorded and the number of abortion-related maternal deaths: in 1990, abortions outnumbered live births three to one. By summer 1990, the main hospitals in the capital reported 70-100 abortions daily. In one year, maternal mortality due to abortion complications declined 10 percent.

Women will suffer in the US. Women will die in red states if they are unable to access abortions or the means to do so. Children will be born that are not wanted and will suffer due to restrictive laws. There are already 407,493 children in the US in foster care.

Foster care in the U.S. - number of children 2007-2020

Published by Statista Research Department, Feb 9, 2022

In 2020, about 407,493 children in the United States were living in foster care.

About this topic, I highly, highly recommended a very moving (and much lauded) movie called “4 months 3 weeks and 2 days” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4_Months,_3_Weeks_and_2_Days

It is, of course, about an abortion in Romania at the time when they were banned. Do watch it if you can…

I have to warn you it’s very triggering. I watched it with a number of young women in my family and they all found it very powerful.

1966-1989 Communist Romania is not remotely close to America in 2022. A rotten apples and iphones comparison.

Roe was just overturned. It's going to take time for the dust to settle. And for democracy to do its thing. What happened in Kansas wasn't a fluke. It's the future. It won't be perfect. Not everyone is going to get that pony. But there will never be a coast to coast abortion ban in the United States. The majority of Americans are ok with abortion being legal, just with limits. Many states are firmly pro choice. WaPo is Keeping Fear Alive™ here to whip up Team Donkey support (who failed to protect and solidify abortion rights in federal law since 1973, BTW) and influence the midterms.

Don't like your state's abortion laws? Change them via the democratic process. Find candidates, support their campaigns, and vote them in. Convince your neighbors to too. And monitor your lawmakers and hold them to their campaign promises. We can do that here, ya know. It's protected by our Constitution. We don't have to overthrow communist governments or execute anyone by firing squad to do it.

I wish I could be as sanguine about this as you, but I can't. I wonder what makes you think they won't achieve a nationwide ban. I do wonder how you can be so calm when so many women are going to die and have our lives ruined. Again, I wish I had your optimism.

I understand that it's tough to trust democracy. And your fellow citizens. But there is no single all powerful "they" imposing their will on everyone. There are Constitutional checks and balances and various branches of government which prevent that from occurring. It's up to us to monitor them and keep it that way.

I refuse to view women as passive victims. We have free will. We have political power. We have changed history and improved women's lives and will continue to do so. But it is a process. And a fight. Costs and casualties and setbacks happen. Sacrifices made. That's just the way life is. But the fight's not over until you surrender. Don't surrender.

. But there will never be a coast to coast abortion ban in the United States.

Don't tempt fate. I really do think Christian Conservatives believe "it's their time" and they are planning to do away with democracy. I've even come across a strange amount of.....monarchists.....(I'm not kidding) or guys with man crushes on Putin.

Don’t buy it. She thinks it’s a good thing Roe was overturned and that the state laws banning it were just. We have to persuade and compromise with those people who want it banned and too bad if that never happens because she puts her interpretation of the US constitution above women’s rights. https://ovarit.com/o/WomensLiberation/110777/a-new-era-beckons-don-t-mourn-organize and https://ovarit.com/o/WomensLiberation/60724/dr-naomi-wolf-examines-abortion-rights-responsibilities-and-adopting-a-new-hones

If they do, they're delusional and running late. They don't have the numbers or good marketing. Or bots to create the illusion of both, LOL.
