I know I just posted about sex shops, but I LOVE Halloween and love going into Halloween shops or Halloween seasonal sections of other shops.

It isn’t as bad this year as last IMO, but I really hate seeing “Policeman” costumes next to “Sexy Policewoman.” Hubs was feeling ornery today and argued that maybe men wish they had sexy costumes and can’t find any. :( Poor men. I tried not to laugh out loud.

Anyway we found the sexy men costumes in a weird corner by themselves, not anywhere near comparable “normal” woman costumes, and most of us know they are for gay men because a man would probably rather die than objectify himself for a woman. How humiliating would that be?!

Also don’t confuse the sexy gay man costumes with what I like to call the “sexual harassment costumes,” such as the porn-inspired blue-collar worker one (e.g. the plumber whose tagline is “we’ll fill your holes”) or whatever. Designed to humiliate women and ruin parties for us so that men can get a laugh and a boner.

Halloween is a women’s holiday anyway as far as I’m concerned. I wish I could go and throw all the bad costumes out for good. That’s what we need, not a book burning but a Halloween costume burning.

Make Halloween a fall harvest festival again.

Bonus points - in my nation's pagan tradition we also slaughter a rooster. It is for horse health, but still, cock sacrifice sounds better than the cock worship.

I throw my own celebration in autumn that I call Pumpkin Day. It's based on a Pumpkin Day we had at school when I was 6 where we had pumpkin soup, pumpkin scones, etc.

Yup. And don't get me started on the "powwow princess" costume I saw the other day :(

I haven’t seen any that bad this year yet, but last year there was a bunch of questionable “voodoo”-themed stuff. Yicycles on bicycles. How hard is it to just not be horrible?

It's why I usually make my own costumes and only get men's if I need to buy from a store. Why do men get to have fun and look cool while objectification is literally built into our version?

I've always made a point to be as obnoxious and un-sexy as possible for Halloween or Carnavales. Everyone loved my sloth costume and it was hilarious.

Halloween is very weird, to non Americans. The best explainer I’ve seen remains Mean Girls.

It is with no pleasure that I wholeheartedly agree. It's in Germany now too and I find it extremely alienating.

Since, in Germany, it is also Martin Luther day, for years i have been trying to clown the Nigel (Italian, grew up Catholic, badly integrated) into believing that Germans traditionally celebrate the day by taping offensive and heretic messages on doors. At this point, he is questioning.

Yes! Being raised evangelical Calvinist, I remember celebrating Reformation Day! One time we had a Diet of (gummy) Worms. It was awesome!

Of course now not so much because of the religious trauma, but you know, something different at least.

I think it makes sense if you understand the historical pagan origins. Are you familiar with Samhain at all?

Mexico also has a lovely Day of the Dead tradition around this time.

Oh yeah, the fusion of All Hallows’ Eve with paganism and the Mexican influence are interesting and sometimes lovely. It’s the “sexy firefighter” and “sexy puppy” costumes (sometimes for children) that are so weird.

Wow, it's incredible that the costume shops haven't capitalised on this already-existing market to have a sexy men's costume for every sexy women's costume.

I agree wholeheartedly. I also noticed this year it seems to be SLIGHTLY better. Went into the Halloween store and was surprised that women had more options outside that sexy BS. Even better, the costumes for girls seemed less revealing/"sexy" (ugh) than usual.
