Leta Hong Fincher, author of Betraying Big Brother: The Feminist Awakening in China, said that today’s ruling was “sad but unsurprising”. “I don’t see the significance of China’s #MeToo movement as primarily in the legal realm,” she said. “But Zhou’s case has been successful in society by attracting support and encouraging women to demand their rights.”

This is hopeful at least. In my country a lot of women have been fined for defamation for talking openly about who sexually assaulted/raped them after their cases were dropped (as most sexual assault/rape cases are). Patriarchy is steamrolling over the #metoo movement in a lot of countries but it's good to see that it's stirring up a resistance in women all over when they see the legal manifestation of their fears of not being believed.
