o/Activism is a circle for sharing various calls to action for feminist causes, including petitions, fundraisers, letter-writing or call-in campaigns, etc.
The call to action should be clear from the post itself. Do not post links to news/articles and then write about what to do about them in the comments. Instead, make a text post with the action to take described in the post, and then include any links to news/articles in the text post. Posts that are links should only be links to pages that include calls to action in them, or are relevant, current activism resources. No one should be left wondering "but what am I to do about it?" after reading a post.
Image posts are only enabled for event fliers and advertisements of feminist groups. No other images are allowed.
Personal or action-inspiring activism reports may be appropriate here, subject to mod discretion. This is not a discussion circle but a call to action circle, so the activism report needs to contribute to calling others to action. In general, it's a better idea to use the feminist discussion circles listed below.
Activism groups that are friendly to gender critical feminists can also be advertised here. However, advertisements for Discord chat rooms or other private groups must be pre-approved by /o/Activism moderators before you post. Please report any ads for private groups that do not have a comment from a mod confirming that it is approved. Never give anyone sensitive information that could be used to de-anonymize you without first vetting them yourself. Be careful!
This circle is about accomplishing specific feminist goals. If you want to discuss ideologies, current events, debates, articles, or news, use other circles such as /o/WomensLiberation or /o/GenderCritical. If you are posting a specific event, you probably want to post to /o/FeministEvents as well.
The Sitewide Rules and Sitewide Guidelines are both enforced here.
Awesome! Wishing you all the best with your new career path. Fellow math lover here :)
When I went to college (for computer science), I knew coming in I was going to have to work extra hard to catch up with the other students (most at my university came from fancy private schools while I went to a pretty mediocre public high school). I made myself a promise to not ever compare myself with anyone else and instead just set achievable standards and goals for myself. I never ever asked other people what grades they got, and declined to answer when people asked me.
I tried to embody the quote from the dancer baryshnikov: “I do not try to dance better than anyone else. I only try to dance better than myself.” I felt it did wonders for me because I was very focused on what I can do to achieve my goals instead of worrying about competing with classmates or feeling like I didn’t measure up. This helped me to hone my studying techniques and feel proud when I met my goals.
I am not sure if this is related or not, but I very rarely felt imposter syndrome, and when I did it was just fleeting and I quickly shut it down. I try to remember that errant self-deprecating thoughts are just thoughts and my own perceptions, which are not necessarily a reflection of reality. It’s good to remind yourself of that when you’re experiencing some negative thoughts, it helps put the trustworthiness of the thought into question.
Anyways, I hope that helped a little and I am sure you will do great! The fact that you had the courage to change your path is already a great start. Rooting for you!
I LOVE this response, thank you so much for sharing your perspective and experience. ❤️
