Saw lots of women out there today protesting for women’s abortion rights. Ghastly disappointed with my local march though. Turnout was better than I anticipated and yet there were no planned speeches, no planned political actions or next steps, no sponsorship or involvement from Planned Parenthood or other women’s groups or local women legislators. It was nothing more than a moderately silent march from one civic building to another and a few impromptu personal speeches made by participants.
Women showed up to fight but there was no fire in the movement!
You know what I think happened? I think they killed women’s speech from the beginning.
Someone started a clever chant using the word “pussy” … and we were chastised because it was deemed not inclusive enough. NOT INCLUSIVE ENOUGH! Not that they wanted to recognize the gamut of female bodied people, no! They wanted us to recognize the other people (men) who were also “fighting alongside us.” Yeah, sure, maybe a TIM or two showed up with female entourage in tow… but the VAST MAJORITY WERE WOMEN. Women fighting for women, as we always have and always will. The handful of men who showed up to support us don’t need us to center them in our fight for our reproductive rights. What insanity is that?
So we were encouraged to come up with a better chant but nobody did and that was pretty much the end of chanting.
In the handful of unplanned speeches we were reminded of trans rights, indigenous rights, and black lives matter, but they were reluctant to use the word “woman,” instead opting for our favorites “people who can get pregnant” and “those with uteruses” and so on like that. Nobody had anything to say after that, likely because they were afraid of using the wrong terminology and being yelled off the podium for being some kind of bigot.
Anyone remember the way the pussy hat debate became THE subject of the women’s march in 2017? We were trying to call attention to the rapist in the White House but instead we got shouted down to nothing by our supposed “feminist allies,” the Trans Rights Activists, for having the audacity to knit kitty hats.
We’re not in Texas but there’s room for advancing women’s reproductive rights here. I know we have extremely limited access despite abortion being technically available. I know insurance companies and health care agencies make access difficult for women, often forcing them to pay the expensive procedure out of pocket or jump through a bunch of hoops, talking to many people before getting granted access to the right appointments. I know the Planned Parenthoods, limited as they are, are booked out for weeks which means driving farther to get care sooner. I know that information isn’t available in enough languages or in culturally-specific ways so immigrant and non-English-speaking women don’t even know abortion is available or how to get it. I know that women are still socially pressured by their husbands, family, churches, and schools to get pregnant and give birth against their will.
There’s room to smash the patriarchy and liberate women… is what I’m saying.
And instead the patriarchy showed up at our march, embedded deeply in the consciousness of women speaking, and reminded us that we ought to be grateful he was there, and to never forget about his rights too.
Chilling.
No wonder nobody had anything to say after all that.
I never could have hoped that that fine day she fired her initial controversial tweet that she would continue to go guns blazing over and over again.
Not to get overly emotional but thinking truly deeply about a woman with worldwide popularity knowing she’s going to be made into a witch but continuing to just wipe the flung shit off and keep talking is enough to make me tear up.
Do you remember when prior to all this JKR had to pretend her “finger slipped” in a “middle-aged moment”? As if some cloak of bafflement and stupidity descends the moment one turns 40? (If anything, it’s the opposite).
This is so much better.
I love this polite but scorched earth approach she's taking. She's the hero we need.
I tell men who call me "cunt" or the like that they can't insult me with words, however crude, the refer to my own fabulous anatomy. Shuts 'em right up.
This is from 2017 people, lol, it says "5 years ago" at the top
Yeah it says that pretty clearly at the top of the page, but it was never implied this was a thing she wrote recently.
I fucking love her.
My 8-year-old niece is super into Harry Potter and her favourite character is Hermione. My sister hinted that she thinks JK Rowling is a "terf," although she hasn't stopped her daughter from reading the Harry Potter books or enjoying the fandom. So I bought my niece book 6 and a badass Hermione poster for Christmas lol. JKR did base Hermione on herself, after all. As far as role models go, she's a pretty damn good one.
omg I love her so much. She pretty much nailed every Reddit "liberal" male to the wall with that one. SO ON POINT.
Okay, so, I wasn't really on board with the whole "JK is GC (or more importantly a radfem)" mentality just because she disagrees with gender, but this has pretty much completely changed my view. I know now that she isn't just talking about gender in all her "rows", but is aware of a bigger overall issue. None of this is meant to imply I thought JK was ignorant, or this community in stanning her too much, or anything like that.
E: I know that this article is old, but this is the first time I heard her mention anything about it, so it's new to me.
I love this. TRAs poked the sleeping feminist bear too many times. Now she has run out of fucks to give and is going full scorched earth! I love to see it! 🔥
Also, as someone who has worked in leftie non-profits, EVERYTHING she says about hypocritical male "liberals" is fucking true! I leaned very right wing for a while in my 20s because none of the men I encountered on the right were half as violently misogynistic as the "male feminists" i worked with. And this trans issue has served to illuminate that problem even further
I love her so much. I wish there was a way I could let her feel all the love and pride I feel for her.
You're not kidding this is epic. Clearly she has no patience left for assholes, and what a wonderful bit of light to have at this time of year, let alone all the other crazy going on!
It's from 2017
I couldn’t see that originally, but it’s still okay. In fact, that’s even better, it’s so rare for real life heroes to be truly consistent over time. I am delighted to revise my estimation of JKR’s character to an even higher level. : )
I think she's just had enough of all of their bullshit. It's truly wonderful and I really wish I enjoyed her writing. lol.
This is great.
I have to say, as someone who just saw a childhood hero of mine aka Wonder Woman herself Lynda Carter tweet that she passionately stands with the people who think I'm a bad person for not only committing the crime of thinking that rape victims are more important than the feelings of their assaulter, but also for being a lesbian who is attracted only to women, I'm so thankful for Rowling being pretty much the only childhood hero left that hasn't condemned me.
Carter might have gotten the opportunity to play the iconic character, but Rowling's support for me and my sisters makes her the Wonder Woman to me.
If it makes you feel better, many celebrities--especially older ones who wouldn't be on social media otherwise--have someone else managing their accounts. And they make deals to be paid to tweet certain things.
Interesting! Now that you say it, I do actually remember it was revealed that George Takai's Twitter account is actually run by some faux-woke group whose specific job it is to maintain politically correct and progressive online presences for their clients in order to keep them relevant.
I found it so baffling. George has to be in his 80s now and I just can't fathom why he cares so much about what kids think about him.
presumably it earns them some kind of income, I don't understand exactly how, but they have agents who handle all of that. He's got a big web presence and maybe it impacts some of the popularity of work he's done before, if he's not still doing occasional gigs.
His account is paint by numbers politically correct but it has a lot of followers, kind of like "upworthy" or some of those 'we're here to agree' type outlets...
Considering the homophobia that most wokesters and TRAs possess, they probably think he's actually a transwoman "in denial".
This is ridiculous.
This. Most older celebrities don't do their own Twitter. Its either their PR company, some intern, or a grandchild
Lynda Carter was one of my first female crushes :(
