Suffragette lanyards to find GC allies
Posted November 17, 2021 by DiurnalPrimate in Activism

A friend told me that her work (a government dept in NZ) has made it compulsory to wear rainbow lanyards. That gave me the idea of seeing if it is possible to find lanyards in suffragette colours... as one way of finding other gender critical people at work. Thoughts?

I have little suffragette ribbons attached to everything :)

I hate it so much, that the rainbow has been turned into a political and corporal show of woke signaling. As a lesbian, I can tell you that me and many other homosexuals don't really like it when straight people wear rainbow symbols. It was meant as a sign for us, a way to solidarize with each other, to recognize each other, to show pride. In recent years, more and more straight allies started to use the rainbow. That was still okay, only a few did it, only for certain events, to show support for LGB people. It made it more complicated to recognize gay people but it was still no big deal. Not anymore. Our own symbol has been stolen and turned against us. I am no longer happy to see the rainbow symbol anywhere, it actually makes me sad. We can't even use different flags, like the labrys flag, because that is seen as a transphobic hatecrime. Meanwhile, everybody else and their dog has their own flag under the rainbow umbrella.

So, yes, we should go back and wear alternative symbols, old symbols of feminist and gay pride, even if they hate us for it. They can't cancel us all.

has made it compulsory to wear rainbow lanyards

That should be illegal. And it's not even about respecting same-sex-attracted people. It's a political agenda. Oh gee, it's just the rainbow, right, not the new "trans" version???

Wearing the suffragette colors to work -- and in 3, 2, 1, called into the office for a "hate crime"? They can't fire ALL of us!

I wear one every day I'm at work! If anyone can find something more heavy duty, I will buy it today and wear it every day I'm working from the office!

I usually wear the one made by the dog collar brand Lupine so I can match my child LOL (and cuz it's strong as hell), but I'll switch if I can find something similar in suffragette colors.

ETA: I found this on the National Parks website for US-based users!

ETA2: And one for the British terfs. Just wish it weren't printed with the text because the whole idea is subtlety. But obvi I love this idea.

ETA3: Here's a recent Mumsnet thread with some resources for you hateful evil witches in the UK!

I like the adult human female one but for the same reasons as you wouldn’t buy it and wear it at work. I make do with their Latin pin and a for woman Scotland ribbon pin.

Excellent! I ordered my US one today!

You could cover the adult human female part with a pin or button when you don't feel safe to potentially show it.

Your friend should object for political impartiality reasons.

I used to think a rainbow lanyard was innocuous and not a big deal, hell I even wore one for a while a few years back at the (kind) request of a gay colleague, and before I was aware of all the TRA issues. But now the issue is wayyy too political. Even government employees sympathetic to TRA arguments should recognize that trans issues have made LGBT and the rainbow a hyper-political issue again, and decline from displaying such symbols while on the clock. Otherwise, they are just displaying blatant political bias.

I love this idea. Let’s do it!!!

Purple, white, green.

Lanyard, yes — but fly those colors everywhere. Bracelet, pin, medallion, hat, socks, umbrella. I want a flag outside my house. Stickers on my windows. On my windshield.

There are places to buy them on line. But maybe some existing GC artists or organizations could produce some. Revive the National Womens Party.

I will have mine with a labrys, thank you.

I like this idea. I'm in.

How is it legal to force an employee to wear a rainbow lanyard? Obviously gay people deserve equal rights, but there are some people who disagree with gay relationships due to religion. Forcing a christian employee to wear a rainbow lanyard (making them seem pro- lgb rights when they aren't) doesn't seem that different to me than forcing me to wear a trans flag lanyard or a pro-life lanyard. I would NOT do it.
