DiscussionSurrealism in writing

Maybe surrealism is the wrong word. But I'm wondering how people balance keeping things not quite literal, for a weird or alien or spooky or uneasy effect, with keeping them interesting.

I'm thinking about how, despite the rich potential for symbolism, I generally hate dream-sequences, visions, and so on, in fiction. They make me switch off. So I wonder about how to write one that wouldn't make me switch off, and could actually capture something of the feeling of a dream.

So, over to you! Have you ever tried to tackle this? What did you do?

Lol you just know some guy at pink news got offended because a male was blamed. The fragility of the male ego knows no bounds.

The "Queering" of the biological sciences is a real thing, unfortunately. Cherry picking assorted facts from Botany, Biology, etc., to bolster Gender Identity woo. See?! Nature is Queer!!

Well, yes. It can be in very certain circumstances, after millions of years of evolution. But Homo sapiens is still a sexually dimorphic species that can't change its sex.

Yes, the whole Queering Nature thing drives me bonkers. All my favorite publications / writers on ecology are all over this. It's so sad. It started out so well, with trying to remove anthropocentric and hetero assumptions from biological sciences, and has melted right into all bodies are constructs, words have no meaning, and clownfish!

edit: just thought to add: mycology is huge in this whole thing. Not only do people use the absolute weirdness of fungi to say sex is not binary, but also to say that individuals do not exist. Sigh.

Argh! This contemporary tendency to mash all the taxonomies together just to appease the gender gods drives me nuts! We've spent centuries figuring out & structuring taxonomic classifications, & this lot are rampaging through the middle of it while yelling thier gender woo. It's wanton destruction of science, knowledge & understanding in service of thier ideology. It enrages me.

fickleherringAugust 9, 2021

Aren't there also people rejecting taxonomy as such? As a racist-western-colonial invention imposed on everyone and everything else, of course.

MidnightAugust 9, 2021

There has always been argument over taxonomy & classifications, & we're now moving to a taxonomic classification system based on genetics (so many species have been moved, renamed & reclassified once thier DNA has been sequenced).

But I can imagine the wokerati claiming that taxonomy is western colonialism b/c taxonomy is like sex - it's a logical classification system based on observed, objective, quantifiable, characteristics.

And since we've all 'educated ourselves', we now know that understanding the world based on observed objective characteristics is western-colonial-hetero-patriarchal evil-ness & must be eradicated.

Maybe instead of sequencing DNA for classification, we should sit down with the tree and ask it where it feels it belongs in the taxonomic system.

This reads more like an onion headline....are we sure that PinkNews isn't turning into some weird version of the onion?

These people carve their own damn brains out to keep up this charade while yelling how much they love and support science.

Penis news is utterly ridiculous. Totally off the rails.

I want to believe he doesn't actually believe that he is a tree and is just saying that he wants to be called 'tree' and that his preferred pronouns have to do with freaking foliage as a way to point out how stupid it is to ask people for their preferred pronouns.

ChopuAugust 8, 2021

his preferred pronouns have to do with freaking foliage as a way to point out how stupid it is to ask people for their preferred pronouns.

It doesn't sound like he is trolling though. We had a fun discussion about this tree pronoun dude a few months ago. Lots of tree puns lol in case you are interested: https://ovarit.com/o/Radfemmery/28582/in-honour-of-earth-day

Oh FFS!

spacykateAugust 8, 2021

Pollen comes from male trees, wtf.

fickleherringAugust 9, 2021

many trees have both male and female flowers. This is not new information. What is new is a bunch of academics taking this to have any meaning for human sexuality, and then the trickle down twitter, tumblr, pink news, etc.

MidnightAugust 9, 2021(Edited August 9, 2021)

trees do not have genders and trees are not 'queer' FFS!

The thread I'm sure they are quoting is very interesting. They should be ashamed of themselves for just writing up Twitter threads as news.

Why bother explaining things like gonochorism/dioecy and hermaphrodism and other standard terms of evolutionary biology?

Jesus.
