DiscussionIs knitting "better" than crochet?
Posted April 10, 2022 by platypus in ArtsAndYarns

Edit: precisely what I'm asking is if you prefer knitting after trying both, why is that? Does it create superior crafts?

Today I saw a thread on Reddit where people were complaining about "knitting snobs" who don't like crochet. Is this a thing? It's not something I've ever experienced, first of all.

But second, is there some truth to it? Does knitting create superior... stuff? Better sweaters, I guess?? Is it more fun? More efficient? Or does it just have a reputation of being "superior" purely because it's harder?

I'm not asking "should I switch to knitting" because obviously, people should do whichever they prefer. But the thing is, I haven't actually tried knitting since I was 10 years old, and now I'm wondering if I might prefer it, if it's somehow "better."

The other issue is that I'm vegan. If knitting is only "better" for sweaters, would it be worth it to make cotton sweaters? Or is there something more wool-like I could use? I don't go for acrylic yarns, personally.
There's also linen and bamboo and lyocel, but those are harder to find and I've never used them yet. And now apparently there's nettle yarn!?

Edit: Much thanks to everyone who replied! A lot of really interesting discussion and opinions, so fun to explore the nuances of our artforms!
