DiscussionAny Weavers here?
Posted April 27, 2022 by Tokenmom in ArtsAndYarns

I've decided to take up weaving as my next hobby and wanted to know if there are any weavers here.

Also, any suggestions for resources? I have a lap loom and a library book on weaving, but I'm still finding that knitting was more accessible when I started that more than a decade ago. Like, can I make anything other than wall hangings on a lap loom?

Placemats! Pot holders! Coasters! (Actually, I'm not sure how wide a lap loom is – maybe you can't even do placemats.)

I've thought of buying a loom and learning weaving, having not done any since I was a child and had a child's loom. I was going to look at door mats, maybe even weaving the backing and then hooking a door mat. I have a couple of looms bookmarked, but that's as far as I've gotten.

You could also weave together woven strips into a basket weave and make things from that.

I got a 27x19 ashford weaving frame, so placemats seem possible, maybe even a small doormat. Most of the tutorials and books and patterns (drafts?) I've found seem to be for rigid heddle looms, but I don't want to spend that kind of money on a brand new hobby. That and I'm so used to the vocabulary for knitting that I want a translation for yarn weights for weaving.

I remember those little plastic potholder frames that came with the loops. I made quite a few pot holders as a kid. :)

Pillow case for a decorative throw pillow - the front part I mean; the back will just be cloth. This is my current project although it is on hold right now (probably til summer). Weaving is awesome!

That's a good idea.

I think you can make whole rugs on a back strap loom if you are willing to do them in sections. Look up kilim.

I considered weaving at one point myself, but I have too many hobbies untended already... LOL! One day, I will weave a giant rug, though!

The kilim rugs are gorgeous, but a rug seems.... ambitious. I'm trying to do a dish rag and it is looking sloppy. I think I will unravel it and try making a coaster or bookmark.

Just explaining that I think it's possible to do quite a bit even on a small loom. Which was the question you asked....

Slightly related, but I bought a Speedweve for repairing holes in my daughter's clothes. It's like a mini loom for visible mending. I've been having a lot of fun picking out colors (already have a ton of embroidery floss) and weaving the patches. I can definitely see how satisfying it would be to weave larger items. I'd love to do a kitchen rug.

I got one of those a few months ago. It definitely inspired me to try something larger.
