FictionThe Stepford Wives (1972) by Ira Levin

I recently read The Stepford Wives and absolutely loved it. Even though it was written almost 50 years ago it still feels relevant, particularly when you look at recent phenomena like sex-positive feminism and choice feminism. It's a pleasant surprise that such a biting commentary on patriarchy was written by a man, and I think he did a great job writing women. Characters like Joanna, Bobbie, Charmaine, and Ruthanne felt so real, which made the artificiality of the Stepford Wives all the more jarring. The book isn't very long (I think my copy was around 125 pages), so it's a quick, engrossing read with no dull bits or pointless digressions. It's sad, funny, and holds up well in 2021.

Has anyone else read The Stepford Wives?
