Hi all, I am wondering if anyone here has any suggestions for books/articles on Amazonian Feminism. I’ve come across this term in my women’s studies class, but I can’t seem to find any information online about it. I know it’s branched from second-wave feminism and argues that physical strength acts as agency for women. Does anyone have any ideas for this?
I have never heard of Amazonian Feminism although I am very interested in all kinds of feminism. I could be wrong but my guess is that it may have to do with the ancient city of Sparta/Greece. This is from Wikipedia: Women in ancient Sparta
"Unlike elsewhere in Greece, in Sparta, unmarried girls regularly participated in sports.[22] The Spartan exercise regimen for girls was designed to make them "every bit as fit as their brothers",[23] though unlike their brothers they did not actually train for combat.[24] In his Constitution of the Spartans, Xenophon reports that Lycurgus required that women should exercise just as much as men, and to this end instituted athletic competitions for women.[22]"
Women in Sparta had more freedom than other women in ancient Greece. And in part this was due to their physical strength. So maybe this is the base for Amazonian Feminism. As I said just guessing - I have never heard of it.
