I had really been looking forward to this book "Real Self-Care" as something looking at more systemic issues affecting health and wellness especially since there are so many GOOPy self-care practices out there targeting women that have harmed them.
But already in the introductory part, I see a mixed bag; this is from page xxvii:
"You'll notice I use the word women throughout the book. The definition I am using is borrowed from Silvia Federici, who, when asked to define the term women, has said: "To me it has always been mostly in terms of a political category." I use the word women inclusively to mean all people who suffer under the oppressive conditions that have typically been associated with the female sex, which includes queer folks, trans and nonbinary people, and intersex and agender people."
The first half is interesting to me as I've never read that quote and I agree about the word woman being political and its importance of being defined in law. But what gibberish is the second half? Like yes, obviously, lesbians are women! "Nonbinary" women are still women. Women with DSDs are still women. Women acting like they're not women can never actually be not women! So I still intend to read this book but with more measured expectations now.
It's a newer book, out March 14, 2023, so wondering if anyone else has read and if it is worth it?
