Has anyone read it? I've got bookstore gift card money to spend and am looking for some good wlw reads. I'd heard from a friend this is an epic fantasy with a slow-burn romance.

I enjoyed the book a lot, although I thought the ending was a little rushed. Would recommend though.

Ah, the old, ending-is-rushed-compared-to-the-story-leading-up-to-it! Affects so many books. :D Thanks for the reply!

I've read it it a few months ago and really loved it. The main complaint out there seems to be that the book is slow, and I see where it's coming from. It is rather slow paced, but I enjoyed the development of the story and how the different pieces came nicely together over time. It's a matter of personal preference. The best part for me were the characters, though. I felt really connected to them already early on.

Epic fantasy? 100% yes.

Slow-burn romance? It is an important aspect of one of the POVs in the book, yes. As far as I remember the other POVs don't have romantic subplots. So all in all, I would say that romance was not really that important in the book.

Oh, that sounds like my type of thing! I don't mind slow if it's the absorbing type of slow. Especially if I'm emotionally invested in the characters.

That's good about the romance, too - I prefer romance as a part of the plot, not necessarily the plot. Not a hard and fast rule, but that's usually how I like it.

I’ve read it! I did like it, but I thought it should have been split into multiple books. It’s a complex story and world with lots of lore and I wish it had more time to breathe and that the characters had more time to develop.

Oooh the more I hear about it being complex the more I'm intrigued!

Personally, I very much didn’t enjoy it. I didn’t even realise it was wlw cause reading it irritated me so much I only managed to get to page 80 or so. The biggest problem for me were the characters - I was hoping for some nicely written female characters but got the exact opposite of what I was looking for.

To give the book a benefit of the doubt though, at the time I had trouble finding any books that I actually enjoyed so it might not have been the book’s issue. Either way though, I’m never planning to give it another shot.

That's such a thing, isn't it? How phases of your life affect the way you feel about a book as you're reading it.

I used to have a rule for myself that I would finish every single book that I started - then I hit my thirties and realized I didn't have to put myself through that. It was the beginning of a beautiful lesson in not putting up with things I don't want to put up with. :D I digress - thanks for the reply!

It's really not planned well. At one point things that feel like a random asspull start happening and it keeps going like this. But there is a lesbian slowburn romance indeed

Ha! I actually laughed at "random asspull." Hmmm...

I enjoyed the world-building and the focus on women being the main characters (there are men as well, but not so many). The author has a gift for writing dialog and characterization that doesn't feel stilted (unlike most of the fantasy I pick up and then put down after a few pages because it's just too clunky) . It was refreshing. Would definitely read a sequel if the author ever writes one.

Aha, cool! I love the idea of women making up most of the central characters. (Ugh, stilted/robotic dialogue can ruin everything.) Thanks for the reply - I've put it on hold at the library, so we'll see! The gift card will be for something else...
