This is another relatively older but still good book – I actually made sure to photocopy the chapters on “resisting indoctrination” (14) and “surviving professional training with your values intact” (15).

Rereading those chapters the other day, it reminded me of some new perspective on the feminist movement as it developed through the late 1960s and 1970s. I had not fully thought through what it meant for those earliest second wave feminists who were busy breaking free from personality cults on top of the overall indoctrination into patriarchy. Serious concerns lest somebody become a “leader” were not just strategic – don’t slip into having a political movement with one or two leaders who can be removed to cripple it – but also literally about resisting re-indoctrination with patriarchy and therefore co-optation into a personality cult.
