My kids are avid readers, but their current favorite author is Rick Riordan, and since they’ve read his most recent books, they’ve replaced all pronouns with “they,” and it’s proving to be an intractable habit.
I am fairly sure those books are why, because their other books don’t seem to have gender issues, and although I haven’t read anything but the first Percy Jackson book, I’ve flipped through several of Riordan’s books and the ones he “sponsors,” and found multiple instances of pronoun discussions. We homeschool and while I know several trans kids, they don’t know those kids themselves, so I think it’s the books, or possibly a TV show. I asked them why they started this and they couldn’t tell me. And we definitely have discussed grammar.
I won’t censor my kids’ books, but I’d like to offer them alternatives that can counter this ideology. I know publishing is mostly captured, but I would welcome suggestions for older books about GNC kids, too, or basically anything that might work to stretch their minds.
