I haven't read this. But I read: https://reduxx.info/exclusive-award-winning-trans-identified-male-author-from-taiwan-sues-critics-who-say-hes-not-a-lesbian/
Kotomi is a TIM who says he's a lesbian and he writes about lesbian experience. From redux:
Li’s critics have called attention to the lesbian and feminist themes within his work in order to highlight the fact that he has deceived the public about his biological sex.
A critic pointed out:
In March 2022, Shawl wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “Li Qinfeng writes lesbian literature as a woman. I noticed a few days ago that he was originally a man. He has been criticized by many people. He is clearly a man. Why can he dictate women’s affairs? Since he is a man, entering a girls’ high school would have been impossible, so how did he create a semi auto-biographical novel [with this theme]?”
Shawl’s comment refers to Li’s book Solo Dance ( 独り舞) which was promoted by its publisher as a semi-autobiographical novel that centers around a teenager who realizes she is a lesbian while attending a girls’ high school. However, Li did not attend a girls’ school
There's a bunch of other mayhem he's done outlined in the article too.
So what's with authors writing auto fiction about stuff that they didn't live? Gonna say this is a case of the appropriate use of the word appropriation here. I mean it has been roundly called out with James Frey (A Million Little Pieces) and Helen Dale (The Hand That Signed The Paper). So why hasn't Solo Dance been shut down? I can only think it isn't known in the West that the author is a man. I only recently came across the reduxx article and the book had been on my to read list.
Only flagging this now as I saw it was the FiLiA Labrys Lit Group's September book. Confounded. I thought they were gender critical. Can only think they didn't know it was written by a man? Anyone go to the group's meeting for this book? What was the discussion like if you did?
