Recommendation RequestBooks on the beauty industry?
Posted December 1, 2024 by Reliquia in Books

I'm looking for some recommendations of books criticising the beauty industry, preferably from a radical feminist perspective but that's optional. I already have the beauty myth on my tbr

Thanks!

always a big fan of ‘beauty and misogyny’ by sheila jeffreys. it’s quite annoying to get a hold of a copy but it truly should be required reading for all women. super interesting and she’s an exceptionally intelligent woman

Yes, great book. I recommend it, too.

Thank you! I've looked it up and it seems to be exactly what I'm looking for

These aren’t explicitly critical books, but they give interesting context on how we got to where we are now.

Glossy: Ambition, Beauty, and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss's Glossier

Botox Nation: Changing the Face of America

Flawless: Lessons in Looks and Culture from the K-Beauty Capital

Not a book, but Jessica DeFino’s substack is explicit criticism of the beauty industry. She often recommends books.

Naomi Wolf's The Beauty Myth

I've heard some mixed things about more recent writing, but this one was good albeit it does discuss EDs which was still a little triggering for me when i read it. She does talk about porn, but obviously it's changed a lot in the 20 years since.
