Historical FictionThe Frozen River

Did anyone else read this?

It's historical fiction that follows a midwife in Maine in the late 1700s. It is based on her diary but fictionalized (the author's note goes into how much). Very strong radfem themes.

It was quite a bit of a slog to get through at times, but the ending was incredibly gratifying.

The nonfiction book about the real midwife, based on her diary, is A Midwife’s Tale by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich. My mother and I read it and loved it.

I really enjoyed this! The radfem themes were such a breath of fresh air and I cheered at the ending haha.

The ending made it worth it.

I haven't but this sounds really interesting. I suppose by 'bit of a slog' you mean that it veers into tedious detail?

Yeah, it gets a little tedious in the middle. It also takes place in winter (in Maine!) and you just sort of feel that viscerally in the writing.
