Hey Everyone,
I've been on a kick of late, reading books by women involving different aspects of the natural world. I wanted to share some of my favorites for those who may enjoy similar books. I've divided them into a few categories:
Kick-Ass Environmental Activists Brave and wonderful women who should be known!
The Legacy of Luna by Julia Butterfly Hill. She's the one who spent 2 years at the top of a redwood tree, to save it and also call attention to horribly destructive logging practices.
Unbowed by Wangari Maathai. First African woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to save Kenyan forests.
We Will Be Jaguars by Nemonte Nenquimo (called We Will Not Be Saved outside USA). Indigenous Amazonian woman in Ecuador who won huge legal victor to protect her tribe's territory from oil and mining extraction.
An Unreasonable Woman by Diane Wilson. A fourth-generation shrimper, mother of five took on one of the world's worst polluters.
Scientific Women
Finding the Mother Tree by Suzanne Simard. The woman who showed the world that trees communicate with each other and that the forest needs more than monocultures.
Braiding Sweetgrass and Gathering Moss by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Deservedly popular, a combination of science and soul.
Finding Oneself in the Wild
Wild by Cherly Strayed. A lovely blend of self-discovery and recovery from grief.
Tracks by Robyn Davidson. Another woman dealing with the death of her mother and doing something remarkable.
The Salt Path by Raynor Winn (and its sequels Wild Silence and Landlines). Going deeply into the benefits of our connection to the natural world, or what to do when you've lost everything.
Narratives on Environmental Subjects
The Seed Underground by Janisse Ray (love all her books). Tales of seed saving.
Reclaimers by Ana Maria Spagna. Interwoven tales of people doing the hard work to repair ecological damage.
Islands of Abandonment by Cal Flyn. Fascinating stories of nature doing its own repair.
Feel free to recommend your own favorites in the Comments!
