I didn’t expect to like the BBC series Poldark on Netflix, but besides its lovely and historical setting, I was amazed at the depth of the female characters and complicated ethical conflicts they get into. Compared to most of what’s on offer at Nf, it’s a welcome respite from murdered women thrillers. The screenplays were adapted from a book series by Debbie Horsfield.
So I checked out the first of twelve books from the library and I’m so delighted. I don’t often read books by men because of the causal misogyny, but —at least this first book—is full of women I enjoying struggling with, and celebrating their eventual happiness.
