The former femen was supposed to speak at a conference, organized on April 15 by the Comité Laïcité République Pays de la Loire, to discuss the state of feminism after #MeToo. Faced with threats and pressure from her detractors, the organizers preferred to cancel her participation.
"I find it cowardly": this Tuesday morning, a feeling of anger animates the former femen Marguerite Stern. She has just learned the cancellation of her conference organized on April 15, in Nantes, at the castle of the Dukes of Brittany, entitled "Five years after #MeToo, where is feminism?". "I feel prevented in my freedom of expression. It is a form of totalitarianism, censorship. It's serious," reacted the feminist to Le Figaro. The one who has been denouncing for three years the dangers of the transgender ideology had faced this weekend an outcry even before having personally announced her coming. A "Call to the counter-demonstration against the transphobic Marguerite Stern" had been launched.
"We can't take risks for something that's beyond us," commented Babacar Lame, president of the Pays de la Loire Laïcité République Committee, who sent her a message mid-morning to warn her. "We don't have the means to fight. We engage something else than us: the image of the castle", adds the one who says he is "disappointed" and who will look for another speaker to replace her. Since the announcement of Marguerite Stern's participation in this annual conference, opponents had threatened to go there with "rotten eggs, a baseball bat ...". The poster of the conference was even mocked with a knife, prompting Babacar Lame to file a complaint.
Faced with threats and harassment since she fights against the transgender ideology, the thirty-year-old at the origin of the movement of collages against feminicides and used to controversies, had begun her week with weariness. On Monday, it is a tired and "blasé" woman who had accepted to answer us on the occasion of a new polemic she was confronted with.
"I am a little ashamed that the attention is on me. I come especially within the framework of a conference of support to the Afghan women", confided the activist. Initially, the event was to be held on March 11 with another guest, before being postponed due to the strikes. "Sabine Prokhoris was no longer available, so I contacted Marguerite Stern to replace her," reported Babacar Lame, the president of the regional structure created in 2015 that receives financial aid from the city of Nantes: in this context, the logo of the city had been affixed to the promotional poster of the event.
"If the city of Nantes grants an annual operating subsidy to this association, it is not a partner of this conference and has not been associated with its organization," had then reacted on Twitter Mahaut Bertu, deputy mayor of Nantes in charge of the fight against discrimination. Contacted, she, through the communication service of the city hall, had redirected Le Figaro to his message published on the networks. "This choice is not neutral while she is in trial for transphobia against SOS Homophobia, a known and recognized association," had continued on Twitter the elected official, who - on a personal basis - specifies that she will "never share the political positions (because yes it is political) that reduce women to "females", to a womb, to a reproductive system."
On March 21, the LGBT+ associations, STOP homophobia, Mousse, Inter LGBT and Famille LGBT+, filed a complaint against Marguerite Stern and her colleague Dora Moutot for "insults and public provocations to hatred or violence" against transgender people. In the line of fire: certain passages of their "Femellist Manifesto" which points out that being a woman is a biological reality.
"The presumption of innocence, people, is when it suits them. We must calm down. In France, anyone can file a complaint for anything. If I had to file a complaint every time I receive a malicious message ... ", had replied Marguerite Stern, who recalls that it does not target trans people but the ideology. "Freedom of expression, freedom of conscience, freedom of thought, freedom of opinion", had argued for his part Babacar Lame, speaking of an "outburst of violence absolutely monstrous".
On Monday, however, there was no question of cancelling anything. "There is no way that I will just shut my mouth", Marguerite Stern had made known. "They are not 15 zinzins of extreme left which are going to make me afraid". The president of the Committee Laïcité République Pays de la Loire, on the same line, had indicated that he was going to ask for a particular protection for the D-day: "the public power is there to protect the democracy", detailed the one for whom "the activists put the pressure on the city of Nantes". This Tuesday, he recognizes that it is "giving in to pressure".
The positions taken by the municipal councillor Mahaut Bertu had also provoked virulent comments in recent days. Julie Laernoes, ecologist deputy of Loire-Atlantique, had thus made a point of supporting the latter, "victim of harassment". "Full support to Mahaut Bertu", had defended the first deputy of the city of Nantes. "It is intolerable, even if it becomes frequent, that militants systematically demonize the expression of contradictory points of view all followed by digital raids accompanied by exclusive identity proclamations," had commented Bassem Asseh. The LFI-Nupes deputy Andy Kerbrat had gone in the same direction, while calling Marguerite Stern a TERF (trans exclusionary radical feminist). This made the interpellée jump. "This is the third time an elected official has used the term TERF to refer to feminists who oppose transgenderism. This term is not neutral. Yesterday it was tagged in the streets of Paris with calls for murder. Today in the mouth of a deputy", she replied on Twitter.
It’s not often I read a more stupid sentence than
Hopefully we will soon live in a world one day where gender won’t even play a role in bathroom design
You really hope that one day there will be no urinals? Those wonderfully designed things that eliminate the very problem you originally caused? That there will be no sanitary disposal units, no sanitary dispenser units?
And the idea of having the washing facilities in a separate room? That is just going to increase the amount of men who walk out without bothering to wash their hands!
I am quiiiite sure that he means there will be only men's toilets, and women will have to take our sanitary pads and tampons home with us, because no bins. If we can use a toilet at all, what with the one actual toilet being occupied by a shitting man, with only urinals being there otherwise.
That's what men usually mean when they say "gender neutral".
I don't get why men need to be told not to pee every where. He's never cleaned a bathroom?
Probably not. Seriously. More men than you realize have never cleaned a bathroom. Even now.
Or as Toni Morrison put it “…haven’t moved a speck of your own dirt around.”
You had to think about the impact on others about the piss soaked floors? You didn't want to, like, not pee on the floors because of your own disgust at existing in a place soaked in your own urine? And you only thought about it after someone complained to you?
Bruh.
Right?
Damn, I always thought men peeing on the floor was due to aiming accidents. Not due to them being happy to pee on the actual floor that they walk on, possibly barefoot. Like ... ew?
How does anyone who hasn't grown up in the jungle have to be told that? (Actually, even if you grew up in the jungle or on the prairie, I would have considered it common sense to not piss in the tent or hut where you sleep.)
On the flip side, don’t run in and out of a gender neutral bathroom because it makes you uncomfortable
aaaaanndd there's the obligatory "please check your basic self-preservation instinct at the door" moment. They just can't help themselves.
Yeah no. The amount of piss on the floor of single user formerly women’s bathrooms in Illinois is a reason alone to run out of current gender neutral bathrooms.
Reddit will screech until it dies that women's restrooms are sooooooo much dirtier and grosser than men's. Not only is it outright projection, lying, gaslighting, and a sexist "cooties" reaction to women having bodily functions, it also conveniently ignores the fact that 98% of the time children are going to go into the women's room because their mother is the primary parent.
Right? Every "gender neutral" bathroom that used to be male/female that I've been in, is just gross now. And the smell!!
Ew.
Most shops in my line of work just have one no-frills restroom—kinda like the ones they usually have back behind the kitchens of small family-owned restaurants, with just a toilet and a sink (like a 1/2 bath in a house)—and the overwhelming majority of the commodes in them have been kept very clean by the (overwhelmingly male) workers, although the walls and windows can be pretty gritty.
That might just be the greater respect of people for the bathrooms at their own workplace, vs. random customers making a mess and then just taking off. But maybe the #boys are just that used to cleaning up other toxic fluids from the shop floor ahaha.
Interesting.
Anyone here in the military? I have been told that someone's granny recommended to marry a man who served in the military, as at least he'd have learnt to clean up after himself.
Wonder if that is true, and extends to toilets.
My grandfather, who was in the navy, cleaned the kitchen and bathroom regularly. He gave all four of his daughters really unrealistic expectations for men sadly.
My dad is a military lifer (now retired) and he definitely keeps things shipshape at home.
Some units use latrine duty as a punishment, so things may or may not be different on the home front for guys who've had a career in those units.
LOLLLLLLLLL this article is hilarious. It's just extremely basic hygiene that you're supposed to master by age 6.
"Don't get your pee everywhere. If you do, clean it up. Wash your hands before leaving"
Men are pathetic
Men need to be told everything their mother told them at age six by a man again at age twenty, it seems. 🤔
Sit the fuck down, literally. I have zero patience for disgusting male pigs that dribble piss on themselves because they're too lazy/stupid to sit on a fecking toilet.
"Don't piss on the floor because FEMINISM"
Dude writing this was probably hard as a rock with libfem-ally euphoria
Should have just written this for penis havers
The author believes that it is about privilege so he focuses on cis MEN and ignores male enbies or TIMs.
I love the naivety with which he shares this revelation. "hey guys, did you know we are NOT meant to piss on the floor?" XD
Worse than a libfem. A man writing for a nominally feminist site (which would be bad enough on its own) telling the world, without any sign of embarrassment or shame, that he had to be told by his female housemate to stoppissing all over the bathroom floor to the point that there was a noticeable odor. Nothing could possibly be more male. He seems to take for granted that this is normal behavior for males (or as he calls them, "people who pee standing up").
I feel gross typing that out even with the spoilers. I had heard Everyday Feminism was terrible, but it's even worse than I had imagined.
How can they live like that 😭 like I’m not a crazy tidy person, but if it smells like piss it’s gone wayyyy past the point it should have
I'm crazy when it comes to my toilet. I clean the entire thing from top to bottom, inside and out, at least twice a week if not more. And once a month I take the seat off and scrub the hinges. I haven't done it in like 5 weeks bc I keep forgetting to buy plastic gloves and it grosses me out
Oh man, my new toilet seats have quick release hinges... I pull them off and toss them in the bathtub to hose down and air dry every single time I clean the toilet. It almost makes up for the childhood trauma of cleaning around the toilet seat hinges and knowing they could never be clean.
I miss paying someone to clean my bathrooms. I hate it.
I hate it too, but I feel so gross if I don't do it
