Circles for women of color
Posted September 5, 2022 by Poppy in Circles

I'm not sure whether a single circle or multiple circles would work best. I'm a black woman, but I'm also from North Africa and Arab, so I don't necessarily share the experiences/issues of black women from North America or Asian women for instance. Different circles would probably work best, but I think I'll even take o/WOC if the former isn't possible right now.

Spaces for black women and other women of color are sorely needed. It's been disheartening to read the comments in the recent KF thread dismissing the rampant racism on the platform as just how things are on the Internet sometimes, as not that bad, and other similarly unsettling reactions. The same users are perfectly capable of recognising misogyny as oppression when they see it, so I don't understand how they have this much tolerance for racism... These dismissive attitudes about racism and the experiences of WOC aren't uncommon here, but they become painfully evident and transparent on particular occasions (e.g. the Meghan Murphy controversy a while back) and I don't think I'm alone in feeling unwelcome on Ovarit at times like that. It feels like we don't belong here.

To be honest, a lot of the time the subject of race comes up on Ovarit, it feels like the claims about TERFs and white feminism aren't entirely unfounded.
