Update on New Circle Creation
Posted February 7, 2021 by girl_undone [speaking as admin] in Circles

After we launched, we had a huge burst of suggestions for possible circles. I posted the previous sticky in this circle with some notes, emphasis added:

The main question about making a new circle is, “will there be enough interest in this to keep conversation on the circle moving?” If you want a circle about a topic, the main way to make us prioritize it is to post about that topic a lot in a more general circle (like /o/Women or /o/WomensLiberation).

We’re still working on our moderation policy and model, as well as moderation features, which is why we’ve mostly been transferring old communities and moderators over from our broader community on Reddit. We’re not trying to ignore everyone, we just need to figure these things out before we expand.

It's been a long time since posting that but the situation is the same. We've been working on being able to accept donations to pay for the site, moderation features that will make the moderation policy work, and putting out fires, among other things, and the moderation documentation and policy which we need in order to create an official circle proposal process and a route for making sure potential mods meet our requirements and understand the mod role has lingered on the todo list below other items.

I had originally thought this circle would be useful for people who were interested in creating and moderating a circle to be able to field their idea, gauge interest to see if there was enough, get feedback on the idea, and recruit other potential moderators, who would then work together on roughly defining the potential circle and some rules, and then they could take that info to an admin. But until we have our documentation sorted, we can't give instructions on how to do all that.

I'm sorry that we've been on the back foot and are quite behind where we'd like to be. We used to volunteer to run a subreddit, now we're running a platform that's expanded beyond our previous project. We're not a company or a non profit that has people getting paid to put in the time to get things done quickly. We're doing the best we can.

A more detailed update on the site's progress and future is in the works.
