General o/WoC discussion post
Posted March 15, 2021 by Whatshername in Circles

I've been reading through the Circle suggestions and I see there's a lot of interest in a o/WoC circle. I wanted to bring up some thoughts and concerns I have about making one circle for everyone who can be considered WoC.

  1. The vast majority of the world's population would be considered PoC. An "umbrella Circle" to discuss women's situation in very different cultural contexts just because those contexts are not "Western white" seems problematic. A better solution would be to have regional circles. Of course, this would mean there are mods available to run those Circles.

  2. In the WoC and PoC spaces I've been present in, there often ends up being a sort of "ranking system", where some PoC are considered more privileged than others, and the "privileged" ones are reduced to allies in the space and are afraid to speak about their own experiences. This defeats the purpose of having a circle where the goal is for WoC to lift each other up and bond over their experiences. Nobody should feel that unless they're the right kind of white, they should be grateful they aren't treated worse. The privilege problem also leads to a clash between someone deemed "more PoC" but living in the West, and someone "less PoC" but lives in their "ethnical home". Who ranks higher?

Those spaces have generally been very "woke", and maybe it's not a big risk that it would happen on ovarit.

  1. Immigrants are not all treated the same (which leads to the privilege problem per my previous point). Whether or not you're considered PoC depends on location. I fear that if a o/WoC circle was created, it would use an American definition. This would exclude those discriminated for their ethnicity if they don't fit the American standard of WoC.

  2. PoC and WoC as terms make sense when defined relative to white. Women who live in regions where most people are of the same ethnicity as them can't really be considered WoC in that context. The experience of being a woman in her "ethnical home", and the experience of a woman being a minority in the West, are generally going to differ. If WoC is defined as being a minority, then o/MinorityWomen might be a better named circle.

In the end, it comes down to the needs of the userbase. Many have experiences both with their "home culture" and with being a minority. Maybe the things I bring up would not be issues at all. But I think it's a discussion worth having.

Also wanted to add, I feel very odd offering any suggestions at all because I can't imagine the work that went into constructing this website so quickly. I'm immensely grateful, and love it here already

It's not quite what you're looking for, but if you spot a little icon under the post title, to the left of the time posted, clicking it will expand the post content downwards. I've found it on text posts and image posts that aren't a link off-site.

Thank you, I had no idea!

I think there was a RES feature on Reddit that made it so you could click a button on the top of the page and all the images would be expanded. Maybe something like that if it also had a text feature that showed the first chunk of text on posts as well? Then it could also be a user setting, and people could have it either way.
